Borland Outlines Client-Server Strategy at COMDEX; Delphi 95 Highlighted as Cornerstone to Borland's Client-Server Vision
Business Wire, Nov 14, 1994
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1994--Borland International Inc. today announced its comprehensive client-server strategy, detailing new products and strategic partnership initiatives the company will implement to maintain a leadership position in the client-server market. At a Comdex press event for more than 100 editors and analysts, Borland also presented the cornerstone of this strategy, its upcoming visual, high-performance application development environment code-named Delphi 95.
Delphi 95 will provide complete client/server capabilities to developers seeking rapid application development, and provides executables that allow immediate scalability from desktop to enterprise data. Demonstrations of the products capabilities will be held at public previews, presented at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. during Comdex in room L3162, on the convention show floor. Pricing information and availability will be announced in March 1995.
Borland's mission is to be a leader in databases, languages and tools to help companies move easily to client/server, said Borland's CEO and President, Philippe Kahn. Delphi 95 signifies Borland's transition into the client/server tools market, with a next-generation, high-performance client/server development system. Delphi 95 has been in field test for 10 months at more than 500 sites worldwide including major corporations, VARs, systems integrators, consultants, and training organizations.
Borland also announced the availability of the Borland InterBase Workgroup Server on Windows NT and Novell NLM platforms, and on a full complement of UNIX platforms available in 1995. The Borland InterBase Workgroup Server is a high-performance, small-footprint SQL database that allows complete scalability and connectivity to LAN and PC-networked environments.
Another key to the client-server vision will be ReportSmith 2.5 for Windows. The reporting and query tool, optimized for SQL database reporting, will ship this quarter, and features live data access, a data dictionary, and data connectivity to promote ease-of-use. And Borland C 4.5 with Database Tools has been bundled with the recently announced Borland C 4.5 compiler, which features full OLE capabilities, the Borland Database Engine, and Borland SQL Links 2.0.
Two joint vendor partnerships were detailed at the event. Skip Glass, vice-president of products and platforms for Sybase, discussed the recent joint agreement made between Sybase and Borland to enhance database product integration. Under the terms of the agreement, Borland customers will benefit from superior connectivity options to Sybase data, as well as offering Sybase customers the added performance and ease-of-use currently available in Borland's desktop products.
Bob Perry, vice-president North American operations for INTERSOLV, highlighted how INTERSOLV and Borland will work together to support Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) for dBASE for Windows and Paradox for Windows. Borland will also create an interface for INTERSOLV's PVCS Version Manager for future versions of Borland development tools, including dBASE and Paradox for Windows, Borland C , and Delphi 95.
These strategic partnerships are an integral component of Borland's client/server strategy's. Kahn said, Rand will ensure that Borland customers have the best access to information and support from technology leaders as they move to a client/server environment.
