Red Brick Systems and IBM target large data warehouses with new IBM POWERParallel systems SP2

Business Wire, Nov 28, 1994

LOS GATOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 28, 1994--Red Brick Systems today announced plans to quickly provide the Red Brick Warehouse VPT parallel relational database product for IBM's POWERparallel systems SP2.

The SP2 enables technical and commercial customers to handle extremely data-intensive classes of commercial applications at an attractive price point within a familiar UNIX-based client/server environment. The POWERParallel SP2 is well-suited to analyze large volumes of data for making business decisions.

"We view the POWERparallel SP2 as a strategic, scalable platform for running large-scale data warehouse applications built with Red Brick Warehouse VPT," said AJ Brown, vice president of marketing for Red Brick Systems. "Customers can combine our powerful software and IBM's high-performance hardware to implement very large data warehouses, those in excess of 500 gigabytes or a billion records."

Red Brick intends to focus efforts on a new class of applications which will exploit IBM's POWERparallel SP2 line for larger data warehouses requiring parallel query processing and leading decision support performance across many industries including retail, consumer packaged goods, manufacturing, distribution, finance, transportation, insurance, pharmaceuticals and healthcare.

"Today's large data warehouses require the speed and flexibility of parallel processing systems," said Ben Barnes, vice president, worldwide marketing, IBM POWERparallel Systems. "The SP2, combined with Red Brick Systems' parallel relational database -- Red Brick Warehouse VPT -- will offer customers the performance advantage they require."

Customers can begin building a data warehouse today with an IBM SP2 System and Red Brick Warehouse VPT running on a single processor, or node. Red Brick will offer the parallel version of Red Brick Warehouse VPT that can run a single database on multiple nodes in the second half of 1995. Red Brick will provide special limited-time upgrades to customers who purchase single node configurations.

Red Brick Warehouse

Red Brick Warehouse is a client/server data warehouse RDBMS for Information Services (IS) and business management who want to improve the quality and performance of their business management applications.

Unlike RDBMS products optimized for on-line transaction processing, Red Brick Warehouse allows business management applications to be developed and deployed quickly; to query very large databases of information gathered from disparate sources; to provide the best access to both consolidated and detailed business information; and to simply run fast.

Red Brick Systems

Red Brick Systems is the leading provider of relational database products and service for data warehouse applications. The company, based in Los Gatos, Calif., specializes in software products used for business management applications and for ad hoc decision support where large client/server databases are the norm, usually tens of gigabytes in size with hundreds of millions of records.
