Business Wire, Nov 29, 1994

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 29, 1994-- Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced the "KAYAK" name for its interactive-television system. The KAYAK System product line will consist of digital set-top boxes for the home that are expected to replace current cable converters and make interactive services possible.

The KAYAK System product line will be able to provide on-screen display of program guides, video-on-demand, home shopping, interactive games and other services.

"This will be HP's first consumer-electronics product that will be used for home entertainment," said Harry W. (Webb) McKinney, general manager of HP's Home Products Division. "KAYAK suggests adventure and also implies personal control and navigation in the flow of information."

HP's market research has shown that what consumers will value the most about interactive television is the control, convenience and personalization it will provide.

The KAYAK System set-top box logo is three stars and a horizon line.

HP is creating electronics and hardware for two-way interactive television services that include "smart" set-top boxes, printers and other home accessories, and video servers and computer systems for billing and tracking. HP's Home Products Division will manufacture the KAYAK System product line of "smart" set-top boxes for two-way interactive programs in the home. To date, HP has agreed to manufacture the KAYAK System set-top boxes for TCI and Comcast Corp., two of the nation's largest cable operators.
