Sun Port of Best-selling FileNet Workflow Management Software Completed; GE Capital to Use Sun/FileNet Solution for Advanced Payment Processing System
Business Wire, April 11, 1995
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 1995--FileNet Corporation has completed the port of its best-selling document imaging and WorkFlo(R) Business System software to the industry-leading UNIX(R) platform from Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC), FileNet and Sun announced today. FileNet's Image Management Services (IMS) software will be available for SMCC's SPARC(R)/Solaris(TM) computers this month, giving the IMS server applications a very powerful, low-cost platform with a premier growth path via symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). A new user of the Sun and FileNet solution is GE Capital Retailer Financial Services, whose automation of a key payment processing function will increase efficiency.
This announcement was made at the AIIM (Association for Information & Image Management) Show and Conference taking place in San Francisco at the Moscone Convention Center.
FileNet's IMS software is a comprehensive set of applications that control the processing, storage, retrieval and printing of document images and other forms of electronic information, such as data, text, graphics, voice and photographs, which are essential for business process automation. IMS will now run on powerful Sun servers, while PCs or Sun workstations deploy these client/server applications on the client side. IMS benefits from Sun's superior multiprocessing technology, in which additional processors can be added to speed performance at a low cost. FileNet also plans to utilize the best-of-breed multithreading capabilities of the Solaris 2 operating environment in future versions of IMS, the company reported.
"IMS for Sun systems gives companies -- such as those in financial services, a key market for us -- a cost-effective way to reengineer important business processes," said Jordan Libit, vice president of marketing at FileNet. IMS for the Sun platform will be available worldwide through FileNet's sales force and resellers.
GE Capital Chooses Sun and FileNet
Among the first users of IMS on Sun systems is GE Capital Retailer Financial Services, the leading provider of credit services to retailers around the world. The company is using this document imaging and workflow management solution to automate a critical payment processing function, replacing a manual system. Documents can now be scanned and stored, and this data is also linked with existing databases on the mainframe and Sun servers.
GE Capital chose IMS for Sun systems because of the comprehensive services within the powerful application, which benefitted from an extremely scalable, robust, high-performance platform. Sun MP technology also offers a low-cost performance growth path. "We now have an electronic paper trail that saves us time -- an important commodity," said Steve Bodall, manager of systems development at GE Capital.
