CA and Gupta enable mobile database computing for virtual office needs; CA to license database technology for real world Windows solutions; Creates CA-OpenIngres/Desktop
Business Wire, April 5, 1995
ISLANDIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 1995--To meet the increasing need for complete database functionality for the Windows desktop and mobile computing, Computer Associates today announced CA-OpenIngres/Desktop, a new product which incorporates licensed database technology from the Gupta Corporation with the CA-OpenIngres product line.
CA-OpenIngres/Desktop enables clients to work remotely and enjoy complete database functionality at the desktop, without sacrificing the power and robust capabilities of the CA-OpenIngres database server. Complete gateway and replication features are available upon connection to the server via cellular or other communications facilities.
"With this announcement," said CA President and COO Sanjay Kumar, "CA-OpenIngres database solutions now cover the entire spectrum of heterogeneous systems, from nomadic to massively parallel. Our clients can create applications that take advantage of all classes of computers and can extend their existing applications to Windows desktops and mobile computers without compromise. Gupta's decade of technical leadership delivering PC databases for decentralizing corporate information systems dovetails perfectly with Computer Associates' pre-eminence as a supplier of software for enterprise business systems."
"We are proud and excited that Computer Associates recognizes the value of SQLBase technology for desktop and mobile applications, and that CA is placing such enormous confidence in the Gupta Corporation," said Umang Gupta, president and CEO of Gupta Corporation. "Users of CA application development tools and the more than 10,000 Ingres sites across the world will enjoy the advantages of superior technology and high performance for building decentralized corporate applications."
The agreement, which provides for joint development of CA-OpenIngres/Desktop, underscores the growing demand for CA-OpenIngres to address the real world business requirements of today's corporations. Mobile computing and virtual offices are becoming a reality that requires the delivery of a function-rich Windows database in a networked environment.
"As we extend CA's range of enterprise-wide product offerings -- including CA-OpenIngres, CA-Unicenter and a variety of application development tools and business applications -- CA-OpenIngres/Desktop provides the perfect fit," said Kumar. "It will become a key component within our solutions -- delivering performance, versatility and wide market acceptance."
The first deliverable of CA-OpenIngres/Desktop will begin with its integration with the widely acclaimed CA-OpenROAD application development tool. This delivery will provide applications -- on any platform and any database -- with a wireless deployment environment.
Gupta and CA signed multiple contracts that included a $7 million cash payment for CA's non-exclusive OEM rights to SQLBase, as well as an additional $10 million long-term loan that will be advanced by CA to strengthen Gupta's position as a leading independent technology supplier to the software industry. Gupta has not yet finalized its first quarter 1995 results, and expects to announce 1Q earnings on or before April 26. The company cautioned that Gupta has a policy of not giving projections to investors and analysts regarding revenues and financial performance.
Client reaction is extremely positive:
"A critical piece to our business strategy, and the most pressing need, is mobile computing," said Dan Rippeteau, director of data services at Healthcare Compare Corp., Downers Grove, Ill. "CA-OpenIngres/Desktop will provide our field reps with the ability to have true mobile computing, enabling replication from the laptop to the host machine."
"With CA-OpenIngres/Desktop, more of our people will be able to develop and distribute applications running on standalone PCs," said Karen Bishop, senior programmer and analyst of The Foreign Mission Board, Richmond, Va. "CA-OpenIngres/Desktop will increase our programmer productivity and help save us money, allowing developers to work locally on the PC without having to consume host resources."
"There has been a tremendous demand for enabling our development staff to work outside the office, at home, on the road, and especially at client sites," said Steve LaPierre, president of Tower Mountain Software Inc., Princeton, N.J. "CA-OpenIngres/Desktop will allow us to provide demonstration and evaluation copies of our applications software to prospective customers to try on their desktops, without having to make UNIX or VAX servers available."
