Business Wire, August 14, 1995

MIDDLEBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 14, 1995--General DataComm Inc. (NYSE: GDC), the leader in providing real business solutions based on its expertise in the digital access, internetworking, and ATM markets, today introduced the Desktop 56/64 DSU, an economical, yet high performance Data Service Unit (DSU). The Desktop 56/64 enables corporations to access digital communications services at 56 and 64 Kbps speeds. As carriers roll out frame relay services, the Desktop 56/64 DSU will yield considerable cost savings to corporations anxious to gain access to them.

The Desktop 56/64 DSU, like a modem, converts the data from a LAN router, terminal or PC to permit successful connection to 56/64 Kbps digital services. Designed specifically for 56 and 64 Kbps speeds, it offers superior cost efficiency when compared to other similar products. Furthermore, because the Desktop 56/64 DSU is easy to install and configure, users can install the product themselves, saving costly fees.

Although cost effective and simple to set up, the Desktop 56/64 DSU is a superior performance unit that offers powerful diagnostic testing and Extended Dynamic Range features. The product's diagnostic testing ability features three different Remote Digital Loopback (RDL) tests that include a standard remote loopback test, a V.54 loopback test, and carrier-initiated channel service unit (CSU) and DSU tests. These tests help identify and solve network problems. Additionally, when coupled with GDC's SNMP-managed central site system, the Desktop 56/64 at the remote site allows the user to verify performance and status of the 56/64 service, itself. The Desktop 56/64 DSU Extended Dynamic Range feature assures reliable operation, even over lines with very low signal levels, such as unusually long subscriber loops.

"With its excellent performance and aggressive price point, the Desktop 56/64 is positioned to capture a significant portion of this market, and enable, among other things, trouble-free frame relay communications," said Michael C. Thurk, senior vice president of marketing and services, General DataComm.

The Desktop 56/64 DSU is pre-configured for most applications offering virtual plug and play operation. However, custom configuration is accommodated using simple, clearly marked and externally accessible dip switches and indicators. There are no complicated prompts, confusing menu trees or lengthy operational instructions required.

The Desktop 56/64 DSU is priced at $349, and is available now. -0-
