Rational Expands Support For Client/Server Development And Brings Benefits Of Object Technology And Round-Trip Engineering To Powerbuilder And Sqlwindows Users
Business Wire, August 15, 1995
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 1995--Rational Software Corporation today announced expanded support for client/server development with a new version of its Rational Rose graphical software-engineering tool that supports PowerBuilder, and expanded capabilities for its existing Rational Rose/SQLWindows tool. Rational Rose/PowerBuilder is the newest addition to the Rational Rose family. The next generation of Rational Rose/SQLWindows adds support for reverse engineering to its list of capabilities. Both tools bring the power of round-trip engineering to organizations using object technology and controlled iterative development to engineer enterprisewide client/server applications.

Rational Rose/PowerBuilder and Rational Rose/SQLWindows enhance the 4GL tools by enabling developers to build large-scale, enterprisewide applications using a model-driven architectural approach. With Rational Rose, development teams can focus on building objects that model the business. The Rational Rose tools automatically generate the user-interface framework, application object representations, and database schemas from these business objects. With Rational Rose, developers can reverse engineer PowerBuilder or SQLWindows code into a Rational Rose model to update their model with each iteration. This round-trip engineering capability enables organizations to effectively use controlled iterative development to engineer client/server applications.
"Rational Rose enables us to model our enterprise business components and to implement them in a manner commensurate with rapidly changing business requirements," said Alan F. Nugent, executive vice president of global strategy and advanced technology at Xerox. "Once we have the business components modeled, we can use the 4GL tool to more easily construct integrated solutions that are tied directly to business requirements. In addition, Rational Rose's round-trip engineering capability allows us to keep the graphical models synchronized with the implementation."
Rational Rose/PowerBuilder
Rational Rose/PowerBuilder is the most recent addition to the Rational Rose family of tools, which consists of solutions for a variety of object-oriented languages, including C , Smalltalk, and Ada. Rational Rose/PowerBuilder bridges the gap between object technology and relational databases by generating PowerBuilder version 4.0 code and SQL/DDL for relational databases supporting Oracle 7, Sybase, SQLBase, Watcom SQL, and ANSI SQL. The product also supports full round-trip engineering for PowerBuilder applications.
Rational Rose/SQLWindows
Version 2.7 of Rational Rose/SQLWindows adds reverse engineering and expanded support for relational databases to its list of capabilities. As a result, the tool now supports full round-trip engineering. In addition, Rational Rose/SQLWindows automatically generates class libraries, user-interface frameworks, and database schemas. Support for relational databases now includes Oracle 7, Sybase, SQL Server, SQLBase, Watcom SQL, and ANSI SQL.
Pricing and Availability
Rational Rose/PowerBuilder version 2.7 and Rational Rose/SQLWindows version 2.7 are available for $2,400 (U.S. price), including one year of support. The products run on standard PC platforms under Windows and will begin shipping in October 1995.
