MCAFEE RELEASES VIRUSSCAN FOR WINDOWS 95 AND ANNOUNCES WINDOWS NT SUPPORT; First To Ship Native 32-Bit Virus Protection with an Explorer Interface for Tight Integration within Windows 95
Business Wire, August 18, 1995
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 1995--McAfee (NASDAQ:MCAF) today announced VirusScan for Windows 95, a native 32-bit anti-virus solution designed to exploit the new capabilities of Windows 95. VirusScan for Windows 95 is the latest addition to McAfee's best-selling VirusScan desktop anti-virus family, which currently commands a worldwide market share of 67%, according to IDC. The product, which ships August 21, has been approved by Microsoft to carry the Windows 95 logo and is certified by the National Computer Security Association. VirusScan 2.25, which includes Windows NT support, will also ship on August 21.
"The excitement and anticipated demand for Windows 95 clearly makes it a prime target for virus writers. Windows 95 is also especially susceptible to viruses because it does not include bundled anti-virus capabilities," said Scott Gordon, anti-virus product manager at McAfee. "VirusScan's new 32-bit architecture offers superior virus detection, while its exceptional Windows 95 explorer interface makes it appear as an extension of the operating system and encourages regular use -- a key for virus prevention."
VirusScan First to Offer Windows 95 Explorer Interface
VirusScan for Windows 95 ("VirusScan") is the industry's first anti-virus solution shipping with the Windows 95 Explorer interface. VirusScan features full support for Windows 95 conventions such as 32-bit protected operation, context menus, property pages, browsers, and long file names. For example, to quickly launch a virus scan from a Context Menu within Explorer, users simply right mouse click on any folder, drive, .exe, or .com icon. The VirusScan menu item will appear along with the other items in the context menu. An automated installation routine performs a complete best-practice installation in under a minute.
"We were very impressed with the explorer interface of VirusScan for Windows 95," said beta tester Bill Heldman, a systems administrator at TomTec Imaging Systems, a developer of cardiac ultrasound software based in Boulder, CO. "The installation is very quick and intuitive, and it gives me the flexibility to perform immediate scans. The product's ability to launch off of Windows 95 drive, folder, and executable objects is very cool. This level of integration is a network administrator's dream come true. We've already found viruses with it."
VirusScan gives users the choice of performing virus scans at system start-up, on-demand, or on-access. VirusScan's virtual device driver (VxD) technology performs memory scanning during initial operation, while on-access scanning technology captures viruses during the launch of any executable files.
VirusScan ships with a pre-configured list of recommended scanning options. Users can also customize the options to meet their exact requirements. From the VirusScan property page, users can define which drives, folders and file types will be scanned for infection. Users and administrators can also choose what actions VirusScan will take when a virus is discovered. For example, VirusScan can be configured to continue the scan after a detection; prompt the user for instructions; automatically clean the infection; or automatically delete the file. All settings can be saved for subsequent use or even as a Windows 95 Start-Up application. Records of all virus incidents are maintained in VirusScan's activity log, which graphically represents actions and also highlights important virus and infected file facts.
Consistently Delivers Superior Detection
The product incorporates award-winning, world-proven virus scanning and removal technology. This technology, called Code Matrix Scanning(TM) and Code Trace Scanning(TM), enables VirusScan to accurately detect over 5,100 viruses. VirusScan detects known and new viruses, including boot viruses; file viruses; multi-partite viruses; stealth viruses; encrypted viruses; and polymorphic viruses. A key reason for McAfee's consistently high detection rate is VirusScan's 67% world-wide market share and correspondingly large installed user base. By having more users than any other vendor, McAfee is often the first to learn about and react to new and emerging virus threats.
McAfee also utilizes a worldwide support team of virus researchers, programmers, and technical support personnel to respond quickly to customers' virus threats. The Company's acclaimed 24-Hour Virus Emergency Response Center is trained to handle customer problems swiftly and decisively.
"We recently had to rid our computers of the Monkey virus discovered by VirusScan," said the support director at Walker Process Equipment, based in Aurora, IL. "McAfee took the time to explain in great detail the procedure required for (Monkey's) removal. The technician was very helpful, pleasant and polite. We choose McAfee because of their quick response ability; a must in virus protection with all the new viruses being introduced. The technical support staff is a great asset to McAfee."
