TGS delivers OpenGL for Sun SPARC/Solaris Systems; demonstrates comparable price/performance for Sun SPARCstation 3-D workstations
Business Wire, August 7, 1995
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 7, 1995--(SIGGRAPH) Template Graphics Software Inc. (TGS) Monday announced a one-year cooperative effort with Sun Microsystems Computer Co. (SMCC) that has resulted in OpenGL for Solaris, specially tuned for Sun SPARCstation ZX and TurboZX systems.
OpenGL, licensed by TGS from Silicon Graphics, is a software interface to 3-D graphics hardware. In order to port the product to SPARCstation 3-D graphics workstations, TGS needed access to Sun proprietary information about the ZX and TurboZX boards developed by SMCC. Through close cooperation over the past year between the two companies, TGS was able to successfully port OpenGL to these systems.

OpenGL for Solaris also supports the complete line of SPARCstation GX, GXplus, TGX, TGXplus and SX systems from Sun.
OpenGL was developed by Silicon Graphics and is licensed to leading hardware and software vendors including TGS, IBM, Intel, DEC and Microsoft. Open Inventor, a C 3D class library which utilizes OpenGL for graphics rendering, was also developed by Silicon Graphics and licensed by TGS.
In the Sun booth (2031) at SIGGRAPH 95 in Los Angeles, SMCC is highlighting a Sun SPARCstation 20ZX, with the TGS OpenGL and Open Inventor products outperforming a Silicon Graphics Indigo2 XZ in a side-by-side demonstration. While performance comparisons are application specific, the demonstration shows that a SPARCstation system can compete in markets where OpenGL and Open Inventor are used.
TGS is also showing cross-platform OpenGL and Open Inventor products in their booth (1527).
"Template Graphics is further evidence that Sun graphics workstations deliver high performance to the desktop using all available graphics APIs," said Bob Pearson, director of workstation marketing for SMCC.
"The fact that OpenGL and Open Inventor on a SPARCstation system running Solaris can perform competitively with a comparably priced SGI system clearly shows that Sun delivers more power per dollar for the users than SGL. TGS has done an exceptional job with OpenGL on the ZX family."
In addition to providing software developers with OpenGL for Solaris, TGS has developed versions of the product for HP and Apple platforms, and is working on a version for Microsoft Win32s. TGS has released Open Inventor for Sun, IBM and Microsoft Win32 (NT/95), and is developing Open Inventor for HP, DEC, Power Macintosh and OS/2 as well.
"3-D graphics is about to move from the technical markets into the volume markets," said Terry Baker, president of TGS. "Over a year ago we saw that Sun hardware was well positioned to garner the lion's share of that market shift. OpenGL and Open Inventor, tightly integrated to the Sun volume 3-D platform, has excellent potential in a number of key markets, including automotive, oil, gas and entertainment."
Template Graphics Software was the first vendor to port Open Inventor to any non-SGI hardware system and deliver the product to IBM AIX and Sun Solaris systems. TGS's Open Inventor for Win32 is the first for Windows NT and Windows 95, and includes support for UNIX, Win32 and MFC developers.
TGS is the selected OpenGL product and technology partner for Apple Computer Inc., and has the only direct-to-hardware implementation of OpenGL for Solaris systems. TGS is also the only vendor to be developing support for OpenGL on Microsoft Win32s (Windows 3.1) systems.
