Adobe Announces New Licensing Option for Adobe Photoshop for UNIX; Individual Licenses Offer Increased Value for Adobe Photoshop for Sun and Silicon Graphics Workstations

Business Wire, August 8, 1995

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 8, 1995--Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:ADBE) today announced a new licensing policy targeted at stand-alone workstations and dedicated image processing computers for the UNIX(R) versions of Adobe Photoshop(TM) 3.0, the world's leading photo design and production tool. New individual licenses for Adobe Photoshop 3.0 offer the most value of any image editing and production tool available on Sun(TM) SPARC/Solaris(R) and Silicon Graphics(R) workstations, providing users with production utility that rivals high-end proprietary systems at an affordable price. The Adobe Photoshop individual license will be offered at the substantially reduced price of $995.

"I don't need a network, but I've looked at Sun and Silicon Graphics workstations as a way to reduce the amount of time I spend waiting for my personal computer to complete image processing tasks," said Noel Barnhurst, a San Francisco-based commercial photographer specializing in advertising photography. "With Adobe's new individual license for the Adobe Photoshop program, I'll only pay for software for a single computer, and that makes workstation performance more affordable for me."

Adobe's new individual licenses authorize users to install and access Adobe Photoshop 3.0 for UNIX workstations locally on a single computer. By contrast, Adobe's floating license permits one copy of Adobe Photoshop to be used on any computer over a network. Adobe will continue to offer floating licenses for networked systems in three configurations: $1,895 for a single license, $7,595 for five users, and $13,495 for ten users.

"We depend on Adobe Photoshop software to produce great images for Tony La Russa Baseball 3 and our other games," said Don Daglow, president and CEO of Stormfront Studios, a multimedia entertainment software developer located in San Rafael, Calif. "The new individual license gives us a lot more flexibility to use the Adobe Photoshop program cost-effectively on our Silicon Graphics workstations."
