AMD Introduces Ringing SLIC and Digital Loop Carrier SLIC

Business Wire, Dec 4, 1995

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1995--Advanced Micro Devices today announced two new Subscriber Line Interface Circuits (SLIC) for telephone applications.

The Am79R79 Ringing SLIC offers through-chip ringing for short-loop applications. The Am7946 Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) SLIC is designed for long-loop capability.

Short-loop applications, such as hybrid fiber coax, Fiber In The Loop (FITL), Radio In The Loop (RITL), Personal Communications Services (PCS), set top boxes and video telephony are ideal environments for the Am79R79 device.

This highly integrated IC features a programmable, constant current design with a battery-switching function to manage power distribution between short-loop and long-loop/ringing functions. The switching component allows a designer to take advantage of lower short-loop power requirements, conserving battery power while operating in short-loop mode.

The Am7946 DLC SLIC is designed to meet long-loop requirements, from low-level Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) systems to highly integrated special service linecards. Battery operating voltage is -40 V to -58 V with a low standby power feature. Programmable features include constant current feed, overhead and loop-detect threshold for the flexibility to handle both metering and non-metering applications.

Other features of the Am7946 DLC include scaled line voltage output, internal voltage regulation, on-chip thermal management (TMG) and a polarity reversal option. A tip open state for ground start lines is included, along with a ground key detector. Power is routed by three on-chip relay drivers, each protected from voltage spikes by a corresponding snubber circuit (32-PLCC only).

AMD SLIC devices pair with the SLAC family of codec filter devices to support battery feed, overvoltage protection, ringing, supervision, coding, hybrid and test (BORSCHT) functions. Aggressive integration and economical package design minimizes linecard board space requirements for reduced production costs.

The Am79R79 and Am7946 are available in various package options and performance grades. The Am79R79-3 Ringing SLIC in a 32-pin PLCC package is priced at $5.95 per unit in quantities of 10,000. The Am7946-3 Digital Loop Carrier SLIC in a 32-pin PLCC package is priced at $5.65 per unit in quantities of 10,000.

Extensive product literature, evaluation boards, software packages and design kits are available to help designers quickly and easily evaluate AMD SLIC/SLAC device features and performance.

In addition to offering silicon solutions for the public infrastructure market, AMD provides a wide range of communications products for use in private LAN Ethernet infrastructures, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) solutions, and cordless telephone applications compliant with CT2 and DECT standards.

AMD provides extensive development support including evaluation and development tools, basic application software and reference designs for all of its communications products.
