Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. awarded Greater New Orleans Business Roundtable Construction Industry Cost Effectiveness award

Business Wire, Dec 8, 1995

BATON ROUGE, La.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1995--Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC) announced today that it is part of the Mobil Oil Chalmette Refinery team honored December 7, 1995 by the New Orleans Business Roundtable with the Construction Industry Cost Effectiveness (CICE) award for its use of constructability and modularization. The project receiving the award is the Chalmette Refinery New Dock Facility.

The Mobil Oil Chalmette Refinery is situated on a 400-acre site on the banks of the Mississippi River, 5 miles from downtown New Orleans. It relies heavily on the use of its marine facilities to ship and receive materials. Because of the limited amount of waterfront footage available to the project, and closure of an existing dock would be required, construction downtime became a critical factor. Constructability and cost-effectiveness reviews indicated that modular construction was the method of choice. Jacobs' fabrication subsidiary, Jacobs Applied Technology, Inc., assisted in the design, incorporating off-site modular construction into the project. This resulted in minimizing interference with the refinery operations, reducing the number of personnel working in the refinery as opposed to an off-site facility, and improving the safety risk by minimizing the work being performed over water.

``Off-site construction should not be force-fit to every project,'' stated Tom Hammond, group vice president of Jacobs Central Region. ``We must apply our knowledge of the techniques and the constructability process to each client's unique requirements.'' Jacobs has successfully employed its modular construction technology in many parts of the United States and key locations worldwide. ``We're very proud of these skills and their contributions to the company,'' he added.

The modular installation was completed in December 1994, and the first products were loaded from the refinery in February 1995. Modularization resulted in excess of $400,000 savings to the project.
