Datametrics Corp. granted key patent for high-speed color printer technology
Business Wire, Feb 13, 1995
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS EDITORS)--Feb. 13, 1995-- Datametrics Corp. (ASE:DC) Monday announced that the United States and Trademark Office has issued a patent for the paper transport mechanism related to the company's high-speed color printer technology.
Titled "High-Speed Media Management Device," Patent No. 5,386,772 was issued on Feb. 7, 1995, and provides Datametrics a protected position in accurate multi-station color printing.
Sidney E. Wing, president and chief executive officer of Datametrics, said:
"This patent provides fundamental protection of the electromechanical design and mechanism by which the Datametrics printer achieves highly accurate dot registration. Receipt of this patent is further validation of Datametrics' unique high-speed color printing technology. Of the 21 patents for which we have applied that relate to our color printer technology, this is one of the most important."
Wing explained that the company has developed a unique expertise in thermal energy management and dot registration, which enables its high-speed commercial color printer, CYMax, to deliver a combination of high-quality images, high speed and low total cost per page.
Datametrics believes these combined attributes provide the company with strong positions in the markets it seeks to address, which include franchised and independent quick-printers, commercial printers, printing service bureaus, and corporate in-house printing operations.
The company's aggressive investment over the past four years has yielded major advancements in its color printing technology. Datametrics is scheduled to begin beta testing its CYMax commercial color printer in the second quarter, followed by delivery of the product to customers in the second half of the calendar year.
Additionally, management confirmed that it is in late-stage negotiations with major strategic partners for volume distribution of the CYMax printer.
Due to the company's significant investment in its commercial color printer technology, preparation for product introduction to the market, and development of distribution channels -- combined with lower-than-usual military-related revenues in the first quarter -- management anticipates an approximate $1.5 million loss in the first quarter and a comparable loss for fiscal 1995.
Wing concluded, "The significant investments we're making in our commercial color printing technology and related products is further evidence of our confidence in the eventual success of this effort."
Datametrics is a 32-year-old producer of computer peripherals and communications products for industrial, commercial and governmental markets. The company is primarily engaged in the design, development, manufacture and sale of high-speed color printers, high-resolution non-impact printer/plotters, ruggedized computers and workstations, and data entry keyboards.
