Business Wire, Feb 16, 1995

TUSTIN, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 16, 1995--PairGain Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PAIR) Thursday announced that it has signed an agreement with Motorola's PCS Infrastructure Division to provide High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL) chip sets for integration into its Teledensity(TM) wireless product line.

The Teledensity product applications include wireless replacement for telephone service providers, wireless in-building functionality for both business and residential, and public pedestrian mobility. The latter application will allow subscribers to carry their phone wherever they want.

PairGain's HDSL technology enables Teledensity to connect directly into the local telephone exchange and transmit at fiber quality 10(10) bit-error rates over ordinary copper wires at very high speeds.

PairGain's President, Howard Flagg stated: "The Motorola relationship is another validation of PairGain's Copper Optics(TM) core technology providing fiber quality, high-speed digital service over copper in the local loop. We are very pleased with our selection by Motorola as their HDSL chip vendor."

"We selected PairGain because of their demonstrated capability to execute a very complex technology at low cost and high reliability," said Lynn Whitington, Motorola's manager of network and standards.

"We are impressed with their proprietary custom VLSI chip development effort. In addition, their installed base of HDSL systems will facilitate Teledensity connection into telephone exchanges since it will be interoperable with existing access platforms."

PairGain designs, manufactures and markets systems which allow telecommunications carriers and private networks to more efficiently and quickly deploy high-speed digital service to end users over the large existing infrastructure of unconditioned copper wires.

PairGain's HiGain and Campus systems are marketed under the trademark CopperOptics, indicating its ability to provide fiber quality transmissions over the last mile in both the public and private telephone networks.

Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems and services. Major equipment businesses include cellular telephone, two-way radio, paging and data communications, personal communications, automotive, defense and space electronics and computers.

Communication devices, computers and millions of consumer products are powered by Motorola semiconductors. Motorola's 1994 sales were $22.2 billion.
