Two Million PCs Were Shipped to the U.S. Home Market During the Holiday Season

Business Wire, Feb 2, 1995

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 1995--Dataquest reports that 2 million of the 5.6 million personal computers shipped in the United States during the fourth quarter of 1994 were for the home market.

Home shipments comprised 31.7 percent of the U.S. PC market in 1994, up from 28.6 percent in 1993.

"The PC is fast becoming a staple of the American home," said Philippe de Marcillac, director and principal analyst of Dataquest's Personal Computers Worldwide program. "Applications such as access to online resources, multimedia entertainment, personal finance accounting, and the ability to e-mail globally have made the PC a cost-effective tool and resource for the home."

Of the 18.6 million PCs shipped in the United States in 1994, 5.9 million were for the home market. Home shipments rose by 1.7 million in 1994 when compared with 1993 (see Table 1). While consumers spent more, on average, in 1994 for individual systems than they did in 1993, their small investment paid off in the form of far better equipped, higher-performance PCs.
