HP Unveils OpenView Solution Framework Program — Opens Up Services to Partners for Integration of System, Application and Database Management; HP First to Tackle Delivery of Complete Information-technology Management from Common Framework
Business Wire, Feb 27, 1995
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 27, 1995--Expanding on HP OpenView's leadership position in network management, Hewlett-Packard Company today unveiled a new HP OpenView Solution Framework program that fully addresses customer needs for network, system, application and database management. The program opens up key services for a new, emerging set of application developers to enable tight integration of their products into complete enterprisewide management solutions.
Implementing the first step of this program, HP now has made HP OpenView OperationsCenter distributed operations- and problem-management software services open to developers through the HP OpenView Solution Partners Program. Other key HP OpenView Solution Framework components, including HP OpenView AdminCenter and HP PCS(1)/PerfView, are expected to be added to this program in the future.
In an effort to deliver comprehensive enterprise-management solutions, HP plans to work with its partners to provide a complete set of recommended network-, system-, application- and database-management software to customers. HP, together with its partners, will deliver off-the-shelf and customized management solutions based on HP OpenView OperationsCenter.
"Companies want complete IT management solutions, not just a myriad of products that may or may not work together," said Willem (Wim) P. Roelandts, HP senior vice president and general manager of the Computer Systems Organization. "HP is again reasserting its leadership with the OpenView Solution Framework so that HP and partner applications, all based on OpenView, can take on the entire management challenge, not just a piece of it."
With this announcement, HP is responding to increased interest by system-, application-, and database-management application providers to join the expanding HP OpenView Solution Partners Program. Several companies, including Legent, Oracle, SAP and Unison Software already have announced plans to integrate their products with OperationsCenter. In addition, solution partners, including Boole & Babbage, BMC Software, Computer Associates, Dun & Bradstreet Software, Innovus Technologies, AXENT Technologies (a division of Raxco) and Sybase have said they plan to integrate with OperationsCenter and other expanded HP OpenView Solution Framework services.
"HP OpenView is well-known for providing the industry-leading network management platform," said Robert Hoog, general manager of HP's Network and System Management Division. "But customers also want their systems-, applications- and database-management solutions to be highly integrated with one comprehensive framework. With this announcement, OpenView's winning strategy for attracting key industry partners has now expanded to allow all solution providers to join the OpenView family."
THE HP OPENVIEW SOLUTION FRAMEWORK
The HP OpenView Solution Framework provides end users and application developers with an architecture based on universal management processes. This architecture recognizes that customers require a consistent set of management processes that can be used regardless of whether a network device, system, application or database is being managed. HP has targeted three initial Process Centers for partner integration. All three of these Process Centers, running on top of the industry-standard management platform, HP OpenView Network Node Manager, form the HP OpenView Solution Framework:
o HP OpenView OperationsCenter provides
"management-by-exception" by addressing the process of
problem management and operations. An operator's
productivity is maximized by using one, consistent
problem-management process whether a problem originates from
a database server, for example, or a failed network device.
o HP OpenView AdminCenter provides "management-by-objective" by
addressing the process of configuration and change. For
example, with one process, an administrator can provide all
computing services for a new employee's PC. Integration
services provided by AdminCenter are expected to be available
to application developers in early 1996.
o HP PCS/PerfView provides information and technology for
performance and resource management. With PCS/PerfView, an
operator can monitor resource performance and utilization to
maintain resource availability and plan for growth.
Integration services provided by PCS/PerfView are available
today.
HP OPENVIEW SOLUTION FRAMEWORK INTEGRATION
HP is opening up services provided by OperationsCenter for developers who will be able to provide tight integration with their enterprise-management software solutions. Application developers will have access to the application programming interfaces (APIs) of OperationsCenter.
In addition to applications provided by solution partners, a broad set of HP management products are already highly integrated with OperationsCenter, including HP OpenView OmniBack II, a distributed backup solution; HP OpenView OmniStorage, a hierarchical storage-management (HSM) application; and HP OpenView OpenSpool, a distributed print-management solution.
