Attachmate's RLN Application Server to support Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server Platform

Business Wire, June 20, 1995

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 20, 1995--Attachmate(R) Corp., the world's leading provider of enterprise connectivity solutions, today announced that its RLN Application Server will support the Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server platform.

The RLN Application Server software greatly enhances performance of data-intensive applications for remote Windows and DOS. Because some LAN-based applications (e.g., database queries, E-mail) can cause high volumes of data to be sent across the slower WAN link between the network and the remote client, the RLN Application Server processes applications locally on the LAN -- resulting in only keyboard, screen and mouse commands traveling across the link to the remote user. By reducing data traffic, the RLN Application Server can boost remote access performance by 300 percent or more.

"RLN(R) is the only remote access solution available that optimizes performance for all applications with a transparent combination of remote node access and multi-user application server access," said Ian Pennell, vice president of the Remote Access Products Group.

With this announcement, Attachmate advances its strategic partnership with Citrix Systems Inc. of Coral Springs, Fla. Attachmate has partnered with Citrix for two years to develop and market the integrated remote node and multi-user application server technologies. Remote LAN Node Application Server for Windows NT is based on Citrix Systems' newly announced WinFrame for Networks.

WinFrame for Networks uses an advanced distributed Windows technology (ICA/tm), which transforms any Pentium or 486 PC into a high-performance application server. The technology provides remote users with maximum application performance across low-bandwidth connections. Development plans feature scalability for hundreds of concurrent users, enhanced reliability and increased speed performance.

Roger W. Roberts, president and CEO of Citrix Systems Inc., said that to satisfy the full range of enterprise application needs, a complete remote computing solution requires three components: an application server, remote node server and a transparent Windows desktop.

"We are pleased Attachmate is licensing our new WinFrame for Networks application server platform for use with the RLN remote node server. Combined, these products will enable organizations to deliver a broad set of client/server, non-client/server and legacy applications to remote users throughout the enterprise," says Roberts.

Unlike traditional remote control solutions that require a dedicated PC on the LAN for each remote user, the Application Server running on a 486 50Mhz PC will support up to 50 simultaneous users. And, because the RLN Application Server is integrated with RLN, its use is transparent to remote users -- they simply click on the desired application icon. RLN has been preconfigured by the LAN Administrator to use the Application Server when needed for high performance.

As a result of independent testing, the Tolly Group awarded its "Up to Spec Certification" to the combination of RLN and the RLN Application Server.

According to Kevin Tolly, president of The Tolly Group, "Other performance tests have relied on raw file transfer rates as the principle benchmark for remote access performance. Here, we focused on typical application functions performed by the user."

The test environment included common applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, Host application access, SQL database access, and E-mail. "The test results showed that the combined RLN and RLN Application Server provide the best overall application performance compared to products that include remote node access only."

"Attachmate's RLN and the RLN Application Server provide a unique integrated combination of remote node and multiuser remote control," said Ian Pennell. "And, this integrated solution is also easy on the end user. The remote user need not choose between multiple access methods for each application. The remote user simply clicks on application icons, just like in the office."

When combined, Remote LAN Node(R) and the RLN Application Server, deliver seamless integrated remote node and multi-user application server technologies, resulting in optimized remote performance for client/server, host- and LAN-based applications. The RLN suite is the crucial ANYWHERE component of Attachmate's total enterprise connectivity solutions that provides access to any application, on any host or any LAN, from anywhere.

The new RLN Application Server will be released shortly after the release of Citrix Systems' WinFrame scheduled for the third quarter of 1995.
