AT&T DONATES MULTIMEDIA COMPUTER LABS TO 30 COLLEGES
Business Wire, June 22, 1995
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 1995--AT&T today announced that it will donate multimedia computer laboratories valued at more than $3 million to 30 colleges and universities throughout the United States.
The computer networks will be used to enrich learning experiences for college students, faculty and others in surrounding communities. For example, more than half the colleges and universities will use the networks to link outlying areas to educational resources previously limited to students or faculty on campus. Others will share newly developed computer-based course materials with high schools to prepare youngsters for technical undergraduate programs. Some colleges and universities plan to use the networks for courses in health care, criminal justice and environmental planning.
The awards are being made through the AT&T University Equipment Donation Program, an invitational program that has contributed more than $295 million worth of computer equipment to colleges and universities since it began in 1984. The computers are manufactured by AT&T Global Information Solutions, AT&T's computer unit.
"AT&T is helping educators move from the chalkboard to multimedia," said Joan Fenwick, director of the AT&T University Equipment Donation Program. These computer donations couple distance learning applications with community outreach efforts to extend instruction beyond the traditional campus environment.
"While we will maintain our tradition of supporting math, science and engineering programs, AT&T's technologies can enable lifelong learning and access to information -- anytime, anywhere."
AT&T's program is intended to benefit college and pre- college students and teachers, as well as community residents and area professionals seeking to develop new skills. In addition, several of the awards will assist underserved women and minority populations and those with disabilities.
Each of AT&T's computer lab donations is valued at approximately $100,000 and will employ networked computing, which integrates computers, applications software, communications and data networks to provide total information management solutions. Each lab will include multimedia workstations with high-capacity CD-ROM storage, a server (a host computer that connects the workstations), a laser printer, networking hardware and related software.
The multimedia workstations play music and other sounds, and display still images and video. Many universities will connect the workstations to the Internet.
The AT&T equipment gifts will support research, curriculum development and teaching in a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, mathematics and computer science, law enforcement, journalism, education, business, health care, environmental studies, English, telecommunications, agriculture, marketing, music and human resources.
The AT&T University Equipment Donation Program is one example of AT&T's creative application of its technology to improve education at all academic levels. Other channels of support include the AT&T Foundation and the AT&T Teachers & Technology Institute.
