Seiko Epson Corporation and S-MOS Systems open new R&D operation in Palo Alto called Epson Palo Alto Laboratory

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 27, 1995--Seiko Epson Corporation has opened a new research and development office in Palo Alto, Calif., in cooperation with S-MOS Systems Inc., called the Epson Palo Alto Laboratory (EPAL).

EPAL's charter is to develop new technologies and products for multimedia and computer peripheral applications.

EPAL, which has been operating out of S-MOS' headquarters in San Jose, is headed by Dr. Kai Yiu. Yiu has been with S-MOS since 1991 and has been developing advanced technology and a new category of system-level products.

Prior to joining S-MOS, Yiu was the co-founder, president and chairman of InfoChip Systems, founded in 1988 to develop and market products using lossless data compression algorithms for disk storage applications. He has also held various management positions with Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto.

The new office is located at 3145 Porter Avenue, Palo Alto.

S-MOS Systems, Inc., designs, develops and markets custom and semicustom ICs, subsystems and card products, and a variety of standard ICs for low-power applications in desktop and smaller computing systems, and PCI-bus. The company also provides contract manufacturing through corporate affiliate, Seiko Epson Corporation. S-MOS was founded in 1983 and is privately held.
