University of Michigan Medical Center selects Siemens for medical image management and communications system

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--JUNE 30, 1995--The University of Michigan Medical Center announced its selection of Siemens Medical Systems Inc. to provide an extensive electronic medical image management and communication system to link Radiology with other departments within the U-M Hospitals as well as to remote facilities.

The contract, the second phase of a multipurpose, multimillion dollar installation, will help the U-M Medical Center meet its operational objective of reducing costs, expanding outreach and improving its competitive position in the market.

The phase-two installation will utilize x-ray computed radiography to link the general imaging reading room with intensive care units (located on four other floors of the hospital), the emergency room, and pediatric ER.

The first phase, completed in November 1993, networks four operating room C-arm X-ray systems and 11 ultrasound units across four medical center locations. "This new imaging technology will enable us to maintain our high-quality patient care with the increased efficiency required in today's health care environment," said Harry Granito, administrative director of Radiology. "Having images immediately available at the physician's desktop will allow us to provide earlier diagnosis and treatment to our patients."

Future phases will include connection to an existing CT/MRI network and will link remote facilities including the East Campus in Northeast Ann Arbor, the Cancer and Geriatrics Center and the Medical Center's 100 outpatient clinics, as well as other University health centers located throughout Southeast Michigan.

With its clinical networking capabilities and SIENET PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) technology, Siemens will participate in helping the Medical Center reach this goal by providing process optimized solutions.
