Safko reminds us we are "temporarily able-bodied"; technology brings hope for the disabled
Business Wire, June 6, 1995
TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 1995--Every so often, an event such as Christopher Reeve's horse accident reminds us of the vulnerable state of our bodies.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economics and Statistics Administration (1991-1992), there are 48.9 million Americans with disabilities. And, according to the 1990 U.S. Census, there are 13.2 million Americans requiring assistance in instrumental daily activities. But, technology is bringing new hope to the disabled.
Lon Safko, founder of Safko International Inc., a company which develops technology for the disabled, says that we are only "temporarily able-bodied." He started the company in 1985 after seeing an acquaintance become a quadriplegic while helping another quadriplegic.
After 10 years of research and development with input from more than 1,000 disabled individuals and rehabilitation centers, the company has developed a system that allows the disabled a level of independence.
SenSei is a complete computer system that provides hands-free access to computer technology. Individuals able to move only their head can make phone calls, control their environment, lock and unlock doors, type, read books and use other commercial software that allows them to return to work.
Businesses and educational facilities can use SenSei to bring the disabled back to work or school and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Insurance companies benefit by reducing the projected expense of a life plan for persons with disabilities.
At $7,900, the system is often covered by insurance, employers, schools or government agencies. Software can be purchased separately for those who already own a Macintosh computer. With graphic navigation and easy-to-use technology, it nearly eliminates training needs.
Safko International Inc. is a privately-held company headquartered in Tempe. For more information about Safko International Inc., or SenSei, please call 602/731-9805 or Internet: SAFKO INT("at" sign)eWorld.Com.
