Vitesse Semiconductor reduces cost of clock and data recovery for SONET telecommunications products

Business Wire, March 13, 1995

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1995--Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:VTSS) Monday introduced the industry's first multi-channel Clock and Data Recovery Integrated Circuit, tailored specifically for low-cost SONET STS-3 receiver applications.

The circuit is ideally suited for transmission and ATM applications where high bandwidth data must be transported between multiple circuit boards or equipment racks.

The VSC8102 performs clock and data recovery from byte-wide data streams and realigns the output data with the recovered clock. By integrating eight channels onto a single chip, this new product reduces pin count, eliminates the need for off-board components and dramatically lowers the cost of clock and data recovery in these systems.

The new Clock and Data Recovery Integrated Circuit exploits the low gate delays inherent in the Vitesse H-GaAs III 0.6micron technology. The sub-150ps gate delays allow a novel digital over sampling technique to perform clock recovery eliminating the requirement for additional off-board components and a conventional PLL circuit.

This unique Vitesse IC also allows integrating multiple circuits onto one substrate without injection locking problems normally associated with PLL-based designs.

"Both transmission and ATM systems share the need to recover clock from transmitted data streams," said Barry Sandefur, director of strategic marketing. "The VSC8102 reduces the cost of this function by a factor of 3 compared to single-channel solutions. This new SONET solution is available as a standard product as well as a megacell in the Vitesse FX family of products," said Sandefur.

"Our first customer is a major telecommunications company. They have already qualified the product and are receiving it in production quantities."

Jitter tolerance of the devices is targeted to meet the Bellcore TA-NWT-000253, section 5.6.4.2 Jitter Tolerance Specification. Peak-to-peak jitter of the recovered clock is /- 400ps or less, with the recovered data guaranteed to have a minimum window of 5ns. The clock and data can be recovered from NRZ and NRZI data streams, and there is no output clock drift in absence of data transitions once lock is acquired.

In addition to the eight-channel VSC8102, a single-channel version, VSC8101, was introduced. The VSC8102 is packaged in a 100 QFP plastic package, while the VSC8101 is packaged in a 28 PLCC. Both devices can be powered with a single 2V or -2V supply with all Input and Output signals transmitting at ECL or PECL levels for maximum system flexibility.

Samples of both products are available now. Production pricing for the VSC8101 is $37 and 100 quantity sample pricing for the VSC8102 is $275.
