Loral Space Information Systems Using Gensym's G2 Software To Develop Advanced Traffic Management Systems

Business Wire, March 2, 1995

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 1995--Loral Space Information Systems (LSIS), a division of Loral Corporation (NYSE:LOR), has selected an intelligent software product from Gensym Corporation to develop advanced highway traffic management systems for the City of Houston.

Loral is using Gensym's G2 real-time expert system software to develop the Advanced Transportation Management System for automated freeway and arterial roadway management--a key element of the national Intelligent Transportation System program managed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Because Gensym's G2 software can process real-time data from thousands of roadway sensors while at the same time suggest ways to resolve traffic problems, it is ideally suited to improving highway traffic flow and safety in major urban areas.

As part of the Houston advanced management system, the new software will allow traffic controllers in the new $11 million Greater Houston Traffic and Emergency Management Center to detect and quickly resolve traffic incidents.

Loral is the systems integrator for the Greater Houston center, which is scheduled to open in early 1996. As system integrator, Loral will integrate new and existing traffic management system components, including freeway loop detectors, surveillance cameras, changeable message signs, lane control signals, ramp flow-metering signals, high occupancy vehicle operations and a computerized traffic signal system.

Loral also is using Gensym's G2 to develop Space Shuttle and Space Station mission support applications for NASA's new Control Center Complex at Johnson Space Center in Houston.
