Digital Link and FastComm Communications complete T-1 ATM interoperability testing between W/ATM GateWay and SARgent; opens way to economical ATM services over T-1 access
Business Wire, March 20, 1995
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 1995--Digital Link Corp. (NASDAQ:DLNK) and FastComm Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:FSCX) announced Monday that they have successfully completed testing DS1 ATM services between the Digital Link W/ATM GateWay Access Multiplexer and the FastComm SARgent ATM access device.
In a recent test, two FastComm SARgent ATM access devices bridged Ethernet segments over ATM virtual circuits established through the Digital Link W/ATM GateWay access multiplexer.
The SARgent access device supports serial interfaces for legacy protocols as well as the Ethernet. The W/ATM GateWay is a network access multiplexer that allows service providers and network users to migrate legacy equipment and existing services onto the ATM backbones.
"The W/ATM GateWay makes DS1-based ATM services an economic reality for both network service providers and end-users by reducing the cost of central office and customer premises equipment required by carrier and end users alike," said Morey Schapira, Digital Link vice president of marketing. "Operating at the edge of the public network, the W/ATM GateWay acts as an economical switching multiplexer and protocol manager for CBR, VBR and ABR T-1 services including Circuit Emulation, Frame Relay, SMDS and T-1 ATM."
"These two products offer a fast and economical way for carriers to offer ATM transport service," said Peter C. Madsen, FastComm president. "ATM over T-1 presents an affordable cost for local access, far less than the cost of T3, OC-1 or OC-3 links."
Today, there are hundreds of thousands of T-1 lines (1.5 Mbit/s) installed, but only a few thousand T3 lines (45 Mbit/s). OC-3 is Optical Communications level 3, or three times the OC-1 base of 52 Mbit/s, and is provisioned on optical fibers.
