Broadcast International Inc. signs satellite services pact with Canada Safeway Ltd

MIDVALE, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 1995--Broadcast International Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS:BRIN) Wednesday announced that it has been awarded a contract with Canada Safeway Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oakland, Calif.-based Safeway Inc. (NYSE:SWY) to provide satellite-delivered services to all of the chain's Canadian locations, which number over 200.

Dwight Egan, president and chief executive officer of Broadcast stated, "We are very excited to be providing these important communication services to Canada Safeway. It is an honor to be chosen as the satellite service provider for an entity of Canada Safeway's stature." Through its Instore Satellite Network division, Broadcast International now serves over 1100 Safeway store locations throughout North America.

Broadcast International and its wholly owned subsidiaries provide satellite delivered business communications and financial services to retailers and other customers nationwide. These services include background music, point-of-purchase advertising, high speed data transmissions, video and audio conferencing, and satellite installation and maintenance services. In addition, it provides check authorization data and recovery services for retailers nationwide.

The company has signed a definitive merger agreement with Data Broadcasting Corp. (NASDAQ:DBCC) through which Broadcast International would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Data Broadcasting Corp. The closing of the transaction, which is subject to votes by the stockholders of both companies and other customary conditions, is anticipated in May 1995.
