Ericsson Wins $140 Million Contract In Japan To Expand Digital Cellular Network

NEW YORK, NY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 1995--Ericsson has received a major expansion contract from KDP, Kansai Digital Phone Company in Osaka, Japan for cellular switches and radio base stations that will be delivered and put into commercial service during 1995 and '96. The value of the order is $140 million.

The KDP digital cellular network is built to the Japanese digital cellular standard, PDC. Today it serves 120,000 subscribers in the densely populated area of Kansai, which includes the cities of Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. The network is expected to expand steadily as demand for cellular services increases.

The penetration rate in Japan for analog and digital cellular subscribers is now 3.5 percent, and the growth rate is accelerating. Ericsson's 75,000 employees are active in more than 100 countries.
