Tandem extends high-performance decision support and data warehousing solutions to UNIX platform; Tandem and Oracle collaborate to bring open decision support solutions to Tandem Integrity UNIX servers

Business Wire, May 18, 1995

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 18, 1995--Tandem Computers Inc. today announced a new marketing program with Oracle Corporation that extends Tandem's decision support initiative to include end-to-end solutions for customers wishing to run the company's Integrity NR family of scalable UNIX servers with Oracle databases. With this announcement, Tandem offers decision support solutions for symmetric multiprocessing UNIX platforms as well as for its open NonStop Himalaya massively parallel processing environment.

"We are leveraging the success of our NonStop SQL/MP database engine and massively parallel Himalaya servers in the high-volume decision support arena over the past eighteen months, and extending that expertise to the UNIX marketplace," said Chuck Buffum, director of Tandem's decision support initiative. "This allows us to offer a broader range of open choices and to cost-effectively implement decision support applications or data warehouses of any scale -- from 20 gigabytes to multiple terabytes."

"Tandem understands scalable, multiprocessor computing and how to implement decision support solutions," said Polly Sumner, Oracle's vice president of business alliances. "The company's Integrity platform is well suited for those data warehouse applications requiring Oracle databases -- and when combined with Tandem's system scalability benefits, it enables users to cost-efficiently expand databases and add processing power to handle increasingly complex data analysis."

Integrity NR SVR4 UNIX Platform

Tandem's Integrity NR line consists of scalable symmetric multiprocessing UNIX servers. Their scalability (up to 36 processors), high performance, and competitive pricing position Integrity NR servers as an innovative platform for decision support applications executing against very-large databases (VLDB). For users with data-intensive ad hoc analysis or real-time processing requirements, Integrity NR servers support Tandem's Integrity High-Availability Transforming Software (Integrity HATS).

Applications

Because Integrity servers are SVR4 UNIX-based, they easily support many popular decision support tools and applications.

"The UNIX decision support marketplace is oriented largely toward individual applications in the areas of product analysis and customer-focused marketing," said Buffum. "We will be supporting a range of software solutions for these types of applications across such industries as finance, retail, healthcare and telecommunications."

For product analysis, Tandem supports such best-of-breed tools as Prism Solutions (for data warehouse management) and MicroStrategy and Information Advantage (for complex data analysis). In the database marketing arena, Tandem works together with such leading solutions providers as Worth Information Inc. and dbIntellect Technologies to implement customer-focused marketing applications.
