Enterprise C/S development to get performance boost; XVT introduces direct connectivity to IBM's DB2; integrates multiple database support into cross platform GUI tools
Business Wire, May 2, 1995
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 1995--(DB/EXPO)--XVT Software Inc. Tuesday announced two new products that will allow application developers to build high-performance client/server applications that can directly access DB2 from any popular GUI client, as well as easily connect clients to other popular databases, such as Oracle, Sybase, and SQL Server.
The new products are intended to make XVT's Development Solution for C (DSC) more appealing to corporate application development managers who have been frustrated with the performance and lack of scalability of 4GLs and emulated cross-platform tools. They also provide the industry's first client-to-mainframe software development solution that directly accesses DB2 rather than using gateways, transaction managers (such as CICS), or error-prone database replication.
"Clients have been able to connect to mainframes indirectly for quite a while, but they've had to give up peformance to do it," said XVT's founder and CTO, Marc Rochkind. "By providing direct access to DB2 data -- and I mean direct -- these database connectivity solutions make high-performance, truly database-aware client applications possible for the first time. They're not just new products for XVT. They constitute a major advance in client/server technology."
The products from XVT are Shadow Direct, for direct DB2 access, and XVT DBAware Client Tools, for use with DSC.
Shadow Direct lets developers build desktop applications that run transparently with data retrieved directly from DB2 databases, without going through gateways, CICS, or any other transaction manager. This direct access to mainframe data lets the client application take full advantage of MVS multi-tasking, so desktop users enjoy the fastest possible performance.
Unlike other currently available products, which burden systems by forcing database updates to be committed as they occur, Shadow Direct lets client applications combine database updates and control when they're rolled back to the mainframe. Shadow Direct provides all the diagnostic facilities, monitoring capabilities, and built-in error checking required for large-scale client/server and client/server-server data processing. Shadow Direct also provides an ODBC driver to interface with XVT DBAware Client Tools.
XVT DBAware Client Tools provides components that manage concurrent retrieval and updating of database information on heterogeneous databases, including DB2, Oracle, Sybase, SQL Server, and many others.
Because it includes XVT's DSC, which delivers native performance on all popular platforms, it offers the most productive C-language solution available for building fast, scalable, database-aware client applications. DBAware Client Tools supports the ODBC database connectivity standard and is therefore compatible with any ODBC compatible drivers.
Similar functionality to that found in XVT DBAware Client Tools is also under development for use with XVT Development Solution for C . This product will be released at a later date.
