Sun Microsystems Provides Easy, Safe Access to the Internet; New Netra Internet Server; Internet Gateway for Solaris Software
Business Wire, May 23, 1995
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 1995--Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC) today introduced the new Netra Internet Server that enables users to easily access World Wide Web (Web) sites and establish a business presence on the Internet. Sun also announced the Internet Gateway for Solaris x86 software to create Netra server-like solutions on x86 platforms; and the SolarNet PC Internet client, an integrated set of tools to access the Internet from the PC desktop.
Features available with the new Netra system include Web server software, easy connectivity for Netware clients, an improved system administration tool for management from any desktop, and server security enhancements -- bundled in a single, easy to install, integrated system.
"Sun is offering a comprehensive set of products and services that enable businesses to exploit the Internet for competitive advantage," said Carl Stolle, SMCC's director of server product marketing. "The Netra Internet Server appeals to a broad customer base since it is the only Web server that doesn't require UNIX expertise to install and manage."
Providing Easy Access for Business
The Netra Internet Server provides pre-configured hardware and software necessary to interface a LAN to the Internet, without the user having to manage the mechanics of Internet connectivity or having knowledge of UNIX.
The Netra Internet Server comes with a high-bandwidth networking connectivity solution, Internet-enabling software and the Solaris operating environment. The system has been enhanced to include Web server capabilities, which SMCC provides by bundling NCSA-based Web server software or Netscape Communications Server for Solaris software. With its TCP/IP-based communications, the Netra Internet Server can run alongside other network protocols without conflict. Basic security is included with every system and full-featured security software products, Solstice FireWall-1 and Solstice SunScreen are options for those with higher security requirements.
The Software Solution
The Internet Gateway for Solaris, which provides the software backbone for the Netra Internet servers, is available as a stand-alone software solution for OEMs and systems integrators in Solaris x86 environments to deliver Internet access to their customers. This software runs on top of standard Solaris x86 and provides a graphical HTML-based set-up and administration tool and a standard mail server software for UNIX and PC clients.
Client Access Tools
The SunSoft SolarNet PC Internet client for Microsoft Windows provides a new level of Internet connectivity and application services for corporate and remote PC users in the Microsoft Windows environment. Features include LAN and modem connection, network utilities, the Netscape Navigator, an Internet news reader, e-mail and remote link manager for dialup services. Designed to meet corporate users' needs, the SolarNet PC Internet client will complement the Netra Internet, SolarNet PC-Admin server and FireWall-1, providing connectivity, PC management and network security.
