Business Wire, May 23, 1995

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 1995--The Internet Shopping Network, one of the largest retailing and mall operations on the Internet, announced today that it will use Sun Microsystems' new HotJava(tm) Browser in its interactive auction service to be introduced later this year. ISN's support for HotJava was announced today at the Netropolis opening event at the Solaris Developer and Networking Conference here at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The Internet Shopping Network's auction capability, which will be rolled out first in California, and then nationwide later this year, will enable Internet users and members of ISN to bid interactively on computer products and many other types of merchandise.

"HotJava is crucial to making our interactive auction service viable," said Boris Putanec, vice president of engineering for the Internet Shopping Network. "The dynamic nature of the HotJava browser benefits on-line vendors and users by making it easy to enhance and interact with on-line information or services. HotJava is one of the elements of ISN's auction service that we believe will make it a truly exciting experience for Internet users to participate in."

HotJava is a World Wide Web browser that builds on the Internet browsing techniques established by Mosaic(tm), expanding them by implementing the capability to add arbitrary behavior, which transforms static data into dynamic applications. HotJava enables on-line vendors and information providers to add applications and capabilities to on-line information and products, while enabling users to access these applications and capabilities regardless of what hardware or software they are using.

The Internet Shopping Network (ISN), a division of the billion-dollar television retailer Home Shopping Network, Inc., is the first large-scale enterprise to embrace the Internet as a new medium for conducting commerce worldwide. Launched in June 1993, ISN today offers more than 22,000 computer products from companies such as Lotus, Symantec and Microsoft; flowers from FTD; steak and lobster from Omaha Steaks International; gift items from Hammacher-Schlemmer; and other merchandise.

ISN employs the Netscape Commerce Server, a highly regarded Internet server that features server authentication, data encryption, data integrity, and user authorization, to ensure secure commerce over the Internet.

Shoppers gain access to ISN through the World Wide Web (WWW). ISN's URL address is http://shop.internet.net. The e-mail address is info@internet.net. ISN can be reached by phone at 1-800-677-SHOP, or by calling (415) 842-7400.
