Herman's Names Pat O'Brien As Radio Spokesman
Business Wire, May 30, 1995
CARTERET, N.J., MAY 30, 1995--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Herman's Sporting Goods, Inc. announced today that CBS sportscaster Pat O'Brien has been retained as the company's radio spokesman. Radio spots featuring Mr. O'Brien, as well as Herman's new jingle, will be broadcast during major retailing periods, such as the beginning of the summer season and Christmas.
Mr. O'Brien is perhaps best known for his role as a sports commentator/news reporter at CBS Sports, a position he has held since 1981. At CBS, he has contributed to "The NFL Today" (1990-1993) and has served as a reporter and features contributor to the U.S. Open Tennis Championship, the NFL, the World Figure Skating Championships, the NBA and other premier events. Mr. O'Brien has also hosted CBS Sports' coverage of the 1994 U.S. Open, the late night broadcasts of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics, and the network's coverage of college basketball, including the NCAA Tournament.
"As Herman's radio spokesman -- a new marketing feature for the company -- Pat O'Brien brings his reputation as one of the country's premier sports commentators. His strong recognition among sports enthusiasts will certainly enhance our position as the East Coast's sporting goods leader," said Alfred F. Fasola, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of Herman's Sporting Goods.
Recently, Mr. O'Brien has been a host of ABC's "Battle of the Network Stars" and "Beyond Belief," a CBS prime-time show. In addition to writing columns for Inside Sports and the New York Daily News, hosting various Olympic and college sports syndicated shows, and reporting on "Entertainment Tonight," Mr. O'Brien is planning an on-line sports "show" on America Online and will host CBS' revamped "Eye on Sports" anthology program.
Pat O'Brien's broadcast career began in 1970 when, after graduating from the University of South Dakota, he was hired as a researcher at NBC News in Washington, D.C. He later worked as a reporter at WMAQ-TV Chicago and KNXT (now KCBS-TV) in Los Angeles, where he won four local Emmy Awards for his news coverage.
Based in Carteret, N.J., Herman's is the leading sporting goods retailer in the Northeast, offering a wide selection of performance-proven, name- brand equipment, footwear and authentic apparel to both the novice and serious amateur athlete. The company currently operates 115 stores from Boston to Washington.
