AT&T Wireless Services Brings Wireless Access to Microsoft Exchange Server; Remote Access to Microsoft Exchange Server Demonstrated at COMDEX; Unique Features Make Microsoft Exchange Server Optimal for Use With CDPD

Business Wire, Nov 13, 1995

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1995--The Wireless Data Division of AT&T Wireless Services today announced a demonstration of CDPD connectivity with Microsoft(R) Exchange Server.

A demonstration featuring remote access to Microsoft Exchange Server via AT&T(R) Wireless Packet Data Service will take place this week at COMDEX/Fall in both the AT&T Wireless Services exhibit booth (L1646) and the Microsoft BackOffice(TM) exhibit booth (2602).

Microsoft Exchange Server is the e-mail server with integrated groupware that makes it easier to communicate. Microsoft Exchange Server integrates electronic mail, group scheduling, electronic forms and common groupware applications on one platform that can be managed with a single, easy-to-use administration program.

"AT&T Wireless Services is a major force backing the wireless initiative," said Rob Shurtleff, general manager of Microsoft Exchange partnership and connectivity at Microsoft. "AT&T wireless data service coupled with Microsoft Exchange Server will improve communications not only among individuals but also among workgroups throughout the enterprise."

"Support for wireless in Microsoft Exchanges Server is an exciting development for the industry," said Kendra VanderMeulen, vice president and general manager of AT&T Wireless Services, Wireless Data Division.

Dan Merriman, director of mobile communications at BIS Strategic Decisions, concurred. "Messaging will be a critical component of wireless-based applications, as this technology is used increasingly in areas such as field sales, field service, real estate, finance, and home health care," Merriman said. "By combining their extensive wireless and messaging capabilities, AT&T and Microsoft are well positioned to provide a powerful wireless-messaging solution."

VanderMeulen went on to say, "AT&T Wireless Services will aggressively support the initiative through a range of marketing and sales programs targeted at potential customers of Microsoft Exchange Server. Initially, our marketing activities will focus on existing distributors, AT&T Wireless Data Solutions Program members and Microsoft Solution Providers."

"Microsoft Exchange Server is e-mail done right," said Allison Koenig, manager of ISV strategic relations for the Wireless Data Division. "This product will provide easy-to-use, reliable, secure, and efficient messaging for businesses of all sizes. In addition, its wireless messaging features make it optimal for use with our Wireless Packet Data Service. Workers will now have more control over what is sent and received across the wireless networks."

According to Koenig, Microsoft Exchange Server is ideal for use over Cellular Digital Packet Data networks because it provides users with the following wireless messaging features:

-- Allows mobile users to preview headers and message size to determine which messages they want to download.

-- Gives users filtering capabilities -- with Microsoft Exchange Server, users can restrict the size of messages to be downloaded or specify that no attachments be sent via wireless communication, for example.

-- Offers users the ability to group messages by type or subject. Microsoft Exchange Server's universal inbox allows users to receive all electronic communications in a single location.

In addition, AT&T Wireless Packet Data and Circuit Data services are part of the Microsoft BackOffice logo program. The logo is designed to provide customers with a seal that clearly identifies those products and services that have been tested and integrated with the Microsoft BackOffice family of server products.

"In essence, Microsoft Exchange Server and AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service will allow customers to stay connected all day and receive crucial messages when needed," Koenig added. "And, because AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service charges are based on the volume of data transmitted and received, not on the length of connection time, Microsoft Exchange Server's filtering and preview capabilities make it a very cost-effective solution for mobile workers."

Based on a client-server architecture, the Microsoft Exchange Server routes all types of messages, manages mailboxes, performs security services to validate user access to personal and shared information, performs administrative services such as online backup and message tracking, and replicates workgroup data and workgroup applications among servers in a business.

AT&T Wireless Services is among the nation's largest providers of wireless voice and data communication and messaging services and is a world leader in air-to-ground communications services. The Wireless Data Division of AT&T Wireless Services is a recognized leader in the development of wireless data communications.
