RADVision and Silicon Graphics collaborate on LAN/WAN videoconferencing gateway; resulting solution will enable Silicon Graphics' InPerson users to communicate with H.320 systems

Business Wire, Nov 2, 1995

MAHWAH, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 1995--RADVision Inc. and Silicon Graphics Inc. announced that they have signed an agreement which will enable Silicon Graphics' InPerson(TM) desktop conferencing system software users to access ISDN through their LAN to communicate with any H.320 videoconferencing station, via an adaption of RADVision's OnLAN LAN/WAN Gateway which will provide the connectivity between the IP LANs and ISDN.

"This development opens up market opportunities for both companies," said Shykeh Gordon, president of RADVision. "Today, InPerson users can hold videoconferencing sessions with other UNIX workstations and PCs on the IP network. With the OnLAN Gateway, they'll be able to communicate with every H.320 station over ISDN by using their existing LAN connection." He continued, "For RADVision, this provides access to the UNIX market plus it gives us the marketing benefits of working with a company like Silicon Graphics."

"Silicon Graphics is committed to developing state-of-the-art solutions and interoperability with emerging standards," said Way Ting, Silicon Graphics' vice president of engineering for Digital Media systems. "With the complement of RADVision's innovative approach to this market, Silicon Graphics will soon be able to offer its InPerson customers cost-effective access to H.320 systems."

The two companies will jointly develop a software driver that will be integrated with the InPerson software to allow it to communicate with the Gateway. Development will also include adapting the Gateway to communicate with the InPerson software and defining the protocol that the Gateway driver and InPerson software will use to communicate with each other. The protocol is designed to closely follow the new H.323 standard currently under development by the International Telecommunications Union. It will be "H.323-ready" when the standard is released.

The OnLAN Gateway is part of RADVision's OnLAN Videoconferencing Connectivity System. OnLAN is the only solution on the market which provides reliable H.320 videoconferencing over standard LANs. The OnLAN Gateway links LAN-connected H.320 videoconferencing stations and remote WAN-connected stations. It controls all videoconferencing traffic, and it performs Link and Session set-up and tear down. The OnLAN Gateway supports multiple concurrent point-to-point sessions at speeds of 64Kbps to 384Kbps. It is designed to be modular, as several Gateways may be linked to support larger networks or added as the network grows.

RADVision, a member of the RAD Group, develops and markets internetworking solutions for videoconferencing. Earlier this year, RADVision's OnLAN system was selected as one of the "Hot Products of the Year" by Data Communications Magazine and awarded "Best of CeBit" Finalist by Byte Magazine.
