NetManage Integrates Progressive Networks For Real-Time Audio Player; Real-Time Audio Player Integrated Into Chameleon 4.6 Product

Business Wire, Nov 28, 1995

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 28, 1995--NetManage, Inc., the leader in TCP/IP for Windows applications and Internet connectivity software, announced today that they have signed a licensing agreement with Progressive Networks of Seattle to incorporate Progressive Networks' RealAudio Player into NetManage's Chameleon 4.6 product.

The Chameleon 4.6 WebSurfer Web browser has been enhanced to support RealAudio as a native data type. NetManage customers can now play both live and rebroadcast audio over the Internet without having to download the audio files onto the user's computer hard disk. Chameleon 4.6 users can access any of the several hundred Progressive Networks sites throughout the United States, including ABC, ESPN Sports, Dow Jones Investor, Time-Life, Fortune, and Ziff-Davis Publishing.

"We are pleased to incorporate access to Progressive Networks' audio sites into Chameleon 4.6," said Bob Williams, vice president of business development at NetManage. "NetManage is committed to bringing customers a completely integrated set of Internet solutions for accessing all types of multimedia information they will use in their everyday life. Progressive Networks is a leader in providing `real-time' streaming audio via the Internet and has a strong list of audio content providers already publishing on the Internet using Progressive Networks' technology."

"There are over 1 million RealAudio Players in distribution, but having the RealAudio Player with Chameleon 4.6 WebSurfer Web browser will give more Internet users, specifically NetManage customers, immediate access to hundreds of hours of real-time audio programming," said Rob Glaser, president of Progressive Networks.

The RealTime Audio Player allows users to play audio files instantly, without delay. This is a real breakthrough compared to typical download times encountered with delivery of audio over conventional on-line methods. Typically audio is downloaded at a rate five times longer than the actual program -- the listener must wait 25 minutes before listening to five minutes of audio. The RealAudio Encoder allows individuals to encode their audio in analog or digital source. The RealAudio Server product allows content providers to distribute the encoded audio or audio-based multimedia over the Internet to a broad base of consumers and end users.
