New EMC service releases customers from shackles of aging mainframe storage devices; Symmetrix Data Migration Services, an industry first, strengthens ability to keep customers up and running through planned and unplanned outages

Business Wire, Nov 6, 1995

HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1995--EMC Corporation today introduced its first comprehensive value-added service offering -- Symmetrix Data Migration Services (SDMS). SDMS is the industry's first migration service to enable customers to move data off older mainframe storage devices onto a modern, high-performance intelligent storage platform without disruption to existing computing operations. With SDMS, customers will gain industry leading performance, functionality and economic value of the Symmetrix 5000 family without costly and time-consuming disruptions until now associated with data migration procedures. Customer applications remain on-line during the data migration process, resulting in continuous data availability and fully productive operations.

SDMS combines unique Symmetrix software with a complete range of services, providing continuous data access and high performance for applications and users during data migrations. Included are pre-migration planning, physical connection and data migration, and post-migration evaluation and verification services.

"Customer tolerance for system downtime has virtually disappeared. Today's leading businesses increasingly rely on 24x7 access to information to maintain their competitive edge," said Richard Blaschke, EMC's Vice President of Enterprise Systems Marketing. "As evidenced by SDMS, EMC has risen to the challenge to develop solutions that minimize and eventually eliminate all downtime."

"Today's announcement is a milestone event for EMC and for our customers," added Blaschke. "For our customers, EMC has reached a new level in providing value, beyond our ability to consistently deliver the world's leading intelligent storage systems. For EMC, the addition of a service offering to our portfolio represents a new approach to driving incremental revenue streams as we move through the second half of the 1990s."

With the new SDMS capability, EMC's Symmetrix Integrated Cached Disk Array (ICDA) platform addresses all possible aspects of storage system operation that contribute to continuous data availability and continuous business operation, ranging from highly reliable and redundant components to advanced software functionality and migration services. EMC's full range of business continuance software and services includes non-disruptive data migration through the new SDMS; advanced disaster recovery, as well as data center moves and consolidations, through Symmetrix Remote Data Facility SRDF remote mirroring; and the unique Symmetrix scalable availability, enabling customers to apply various levels of data protection on the same Symmetrix system. No other vendor offers this extensive range of business continuance solutions.
