New EMC enterprise storage platform bridges mainframe and open systems environments
Business Wire, Nov 6, 1995
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1995 -- EMC Corporation today announced the Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (Symmetrix ESP), for the first time providing simultaneous storage of mainframe and open systems data on the same Symmetrix 5000 ICDA system.
With the addition of Symmetrix ESP, customers now can take advantage of advanced Symmetrix functionality and performance in mainframe-only, open systems-only, and mixed mainframe and open systems environments. "Investments in new capabilities for mainframe environments has not kept pace with the accelerated use of open systems platforms. However, to fulfill aggressive business demands and remain competitive, customers need to increase the performance of existing mainframe resources," said Richard Blaschke, EMC's Vice President of Enterprise Systems Marketing. "Symmetrix ESP addresses these issues and further advances EMC's leadership in helping companies generate strategic value from their intelligent information storage solutions."
Symmetrix ESP is the first information storage solution from any major vendor to combine simultaneous mainframe-class I/O performance and continuous data availability for all major heterogeneous CPU platforms. This provides unmatched asset protection and flexibility for customers with both mainframe and open systems in the same data center, as well as a single consistent storage platform for customers planning to migrate from mainframes to open systems. Symmetrix ESP includes support for all IBM and IBM-compatible mainframes through both ESCON and parallel channel connections, and support for all major open RISC, PC LAN and AS/400 servers through industry standard Fast Wide Differential SCSI interfaces.
"EMC truly gives customers storage with a future," added Blaschke. "Customers who purchase Symmetrix today will now be able to migrate to open systems at any time, without having to purchase entirely new storage systems." Through its MOSAIC:2000 architectural philosophy, EMC delivers customers new technologies with the fastest time-to-market while posing the least disruption to their existing computing operations. This consistent approach preserves customers investment through longer useful life of staff knowledge, host processors, host applications software and hardware infrastructure. As a direct result of MOSAIC:2000, EMC has introduced more new storage products and advanced features for the Symmetrix 5000 family in the last year than all mainframe storage competitors combined.
