U S WEST re-engineers with $7.2 million Unisys image-based remittance processing solution
Business Wire, Oct 16, 1995
BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 1995--Unisys Corp. Monday announced that it has delivered to U S WEST Communications a state-of-art, image-based remittance processing system.
The $7.2 million system was co-developed by Unisys and U S WEST Communications and was specifically designed to meet the needs of a large communications enterprise. The client/server system has been installed and fully implemented at U S WEST sites in Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Des Moines, Iowa and Plymouth, Minn.
It is one of the largest image-based remittance processing operations in the communications industry and the only one uniquely designed from the ground up specifically for that industry.
Unisys also announced that it will market the solution worldwide to other large communications companies. The high payment volumes and the mixture of payment types processed by large communications companies such as U S WEST Communications present a variety of high- cost payment processing challenges.
This system meets those challenges, resulting in an extraordinary reduction in costs. Unisys projects that this system would provide any large communications company a savings in the cost of ongoing operations.
This new image-based remittance processing system is the result of a total process redesign project undertaken by U S WEST. Unisys systems integration specialists and other information services consultants worked with U S WEST to design and implement a comprehensive information management solution that helped U S WEST meet its business objectives.
The U S WEST vision at the outset was "to be the recognized industry leader in the field of remittance processing." The five strategies to achieve that vision were: -0-
o Revitalize the Organization
o Improve Human Factors
o Extend Customer Focus
o Excel at Quality Service
o Reduce Costs -0-
"We knew that realizing our vision would not be a simple process," said Peggy Tumey, vice president, Financial Operations, U S WEST Communications. "We selected Unisys as our technology partner in this effort because we believed that Unisys shared our vision and was both qualified and committed to ensuring our joint success.
"While the technology Unisys provided is clearly leading-edge, Unisys total commitment to supporting our complex process re-design requirements has been a major factor in our success."
"This is an excellent example of how Unisys and its clients can team together to co-produce solutions that address their needs and exploit new business opportunities," added Patricia Higgins, president, Unisys Communications Line of Business.
Leading-edge technology: tuned for the exceptions
The system is based on the Unisys industry-leading high-volume check imaging technology currently used at many banks and financial services organizations and leverages Unisys expertise in payment systems and high-volume image-based processing.
The technology used includes "courtesy amount read" (CAR), an advanced function which allows the system to automatically recognize and interpret the dollar value of a hand-written check.
Other key features of the systems design include: -0-
Customized Microsoft Windows user interface:
The screen and report designs were all prototyped to ensure
