Business Wire, Oct 16, 1995

BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 1995--Horry Telephone Cooperative, Conway, S.C., has become one of the leading independent telephone companies in the state offering switched broadband services.

The company has begun deployment of Siemens Stromberg-Carlson's EWSXpress 2100 Service Access Switches at multiple locations in its service area, and is offering customers DXI, SMDS and Frame Relay data services, as well as high-speed access to the Internet.

Driving Horry Telephone's decision was the need of regional schools to provide shared teaching and interactive multi-media educational services to their students. "We will be linking up to 40 different locations with broadband connections," said Curley Huggins, chief executive officer of the telephone cooperative.

"Teachers and special facilities in one school will be shared among all, and individualized learning programs will be available to every student at every level. The benefits to the community and to education in Horry County are unlimited."

The EWSXpress 2100 Service Access Switch is part of a full family of ATM and broadband networking products offered by Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. Horry Telephone will be able to add other ATM network components as dictated by service demand.

"Horry Telephone has been a valued customer of ours for quite some time," said Fred Fromm, Siemens Stromberg-Carlson's president and chief executive officer. "We are delighted to be partnering with them as they move forward to a new generation of broadband communications services."
