Cylink Announces Wireless Modem For European Market

Business Wire, Oct 2, 1995

GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 1995--Cylink Corporation today announced the latest entry in its AirLink wireless modem family, a full duplex 128kbps wireless modem approved by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) for use in the European market.

Cylink's family of wireless modems connect people when telephone wires are not available, or need to be supplemented. The highly reliable modems are used in rural locations, across bodies of water and for disaster recovery, for example. The wireless modems have been used for such applications as oil drilling in the North Sea, connecting people in remote areas in India, and establishing a telephone service in China. In Europe, AirLink modems are at work from Hungary to Scandinavia.

The AirLink ETSI 128 kbps wireless modem provides cost-effective, quickly deployable, and interference-resistant wireless transmission. Robust and reliable, the AirLink family can exceed a 10 (to the -10) bit error rate, which surpasses many wire services, and can transmit across a distance of 10 kilometers. The product meets ETSI specifications for spread-spectrum, 2.400-2.4835 GHz microwave radios.

"Cylink has an active wireless communications business that is rapidly expanding," said Steve Goldberg, vice president and general manager, Wireless Products, Cylink. "Our AirLink family of radios have proven to be a hit in the marketplace with over 10,000 wireless modems installed worldwide. This is proven technology that has been in production for over four years, and has recently been made available to the European market."

The modems typically establish a digital link with quality and reliability often exceeding that of digital wires. When combined with multiplexers that feed into the AirLink, multiple channels can be established with voice, fax, e-mail, LANs and data services. The AirLink family of products is interoperable with all popular communication products.

Price and Availability

The new AirLink ETSI modem is in customer trials now, and will ship by the first quarter of next year. The product in U.S. currency is $8,000 per link, which includes two radios, two antennas and cabling.
