MICRON TECHNOLOGY INC., ANNOUNCES TRUE 66MHz SYSTEM PERFORMANCE USING 16 MEG BURST EDO DRAMS
Business Wire, Oct 2, 1995
BOISE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 1995--Micron Technology, Inc., today announced that Burst Extended Data-Out (EDO) DRAMs have been benchmarked operating at 66MHz and 60MHz in motherboards using chipsets from VIA Technologies, Pico Power Technology, and UMC. Micron also announced availability of production quantities of its Burst EDO DRAMs in 2 Meg x 8 (MT4LC2M8F4DJ), 1 Meg x 16 (MT4LC1M16H5TG), and 4 Meg x 4 (MT4LC4M4G6DJ) organizations. The Burst EDO option, as well as FPM and EDO options, are now available on all Micron's 16 Meg DRAMs. Burst EDO provides up to a 100% performance improvement compared to today's Fast Page Mode (FPM) DRAMs, increasing the page mode rate to 66MHz and beyond. This performance increase is achieved without additional die size or cost over FPM or EDO DRAMs.
"We believe that these are the first PC chipsets that are running any DRAM technology at 66MHz bus speeds," said Jeff Mailloux, Micron's Strategic Product Marketing Manager for DRAMs. "This is a major accomplishment for chipset, system, and DRAM designers. Burst EDO is a lower cost alternative to other high-speed memory technologies which may require a new bus architecture, a separate die, or dedicated test and production equipment."
The demand for higher speed main memory is being driven by higher performance CPUs and new architectures such as cacheless systems and unified memory. Micron has converted its 16 Meg DRAM production to die that include the Burst EDO option.
These fully qualified 16 Meg Burst EDO DRAMs are also available on SIMM and DIMM modules configured as 1 Meg x 32, 2 Meg x 32, 4 Meg x 32, 8 Meg x 32, 1 Meg x 64, 2 Meg x 64, and 4 Meg x 64. Production quantities can be ordered now. Volume pricing for Micron's 16 Meg Burst EDO DRAMs and modules is the same as similarly configured 16 Meg EDO DRAMs and modules. Micron Technology, Inc., and its subsidiaries manufacture and market DRAMs, fast SRAMs, other semiconductor components, board-level products, and personal computer systems. Micron's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange, Inc. (NYSE) under the symbol MU.
