Intel Introduces Fastest Pentium Processor Designed for Mobile Computers; Sets Stage for Broad Product Offerings Based on Pentium Processors

Business Wire, Oct 23, 1995

Corporation today introduced a 120-MHz Pentium(R) processor, continuing to set the pace for desktop-equivalent performance in mobile computers.

The fastest Pentium processor for notebooks will continue to accelerate the trend toward integrating advanced desktop features into mobile systems. Many systems based on the 120-MHz Pentium processor will include multimedia capabilities such as sound and full-motion video, larger and higher resolution screens and exchangeable peripherals such as CD-ROMs.

The Pentium Processor at iCOMP(R) 1000\120 is also the first microprocessor for mobile systems built on Intel's advanced .35 micron manufacturing technology, resulting in a chip the size of a small child's fingernail, but containing 3.3 million transistors. The small chip size makes it possible for systems to deliver the highest level of performance with very low power consumption for long battery life. The 120-MHz processor is the third member of the Pentium processor family to be introduced in a year.

"The 120-MHz Pentium processor in notebooks will offer a no- compromise solution to professionals who need high performance and multimedia capabilities commonly found in desktop systems today," said Stephen P. Nachtsheim, vice president, Mobile and Handheld Products Group. "For mobile users, its introduction broadens the selection of price and performance choices based on the Pentium processor family."

IDC estimates that the worldwide mobile computing market segment will exceed 9.5 million units this year. This will be a 29 percent increase over 1994, compared with 20 percent for the desktop market segment, making the portable market segment one of the fastest growing in the industry. Key elements driving the market are the expected rapid upgrade by users to color displays and to Pentium processors, and the emergence of a high-volume value market, according to IDC.

Like the 90- and 75-MHz processors for mobile systems introduced in the past year, the 120-MHz Pentium processor is offered in an innovative postage-stamp sized package. The processor has a dual voltage capability that allows high-performance processors to operate in a thermally efficient manner.

The 120-MHz Pentium processor in the thin, light-weight Tape Carrier Package (TCP) offers a highly efficient means for managing thermal elements in mobile systems. Voltage Reduction Technology enables the 120-MHz Pentium processor to interface at 3.3 volts with other off-the-shelf components, while its inner core operates at a lower power 2.9 volts. Voltage Reduction Technology allows the processor to deliver up to 30 percent more performance than the 90-MHz Pentium processor but at the same power consumption.

The 120-MHz Pentium processor for mobile systems is available in both Tape Carrier Packaging (TCP) and conventional ceramic packaging with built-in Voltage Reduction Technology. In 1,000-unit quantities it is priced at $681. The price of the 90-MHz Pentium processor is $341, while the 75-MHz Pentium processor is $204 in 1,000-unit quantities.

The 120-MHz Pentium processor delivers 172.2 SPECint92 and 108.4 SPECfp92 of performance, and SPECint95 performance of 3.72 and SPECfp95 performance of 2.81. It has a typical power dissipation of 2.5 to 3.5 watts and idle power consumption of less than 1 watt.

Comprehensive information about the 120-MHz Pentium processor is also available at Intel's site on the World Wide Web. The information is part of Intel's WWW home page at URL http://www.intel.com/.>Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of personal computer, networking and communications products.
