Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. Purchases Canadian Quarry

RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1995--Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (NYSE:MLM) today announced that it has purchased a Canadian quarry from Construction Aggregates Ltd., a subsidiary of Lone Star Industries. The quarry, which produces granite used in asphalt and concrete, is located on the Strait of Canso in Nova Scotia, Canada. The operation has over 700 million tons of stone reserves with a capacity of approximately 2.4 million tons per year, and furnishes material via self-unloading ships and barges to customers in Nova Scotia, the eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States, and the Caribbean Islands. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Martin Marietta Materials' President and Chief Executive Officer, Stephen P. Zelnak, Jr., stated that the purchase will broaden Martin Marietta Materials' marketing opportunities geographically and, coupled with the Company's limestone production in the Bahamas, will provide a full line of crushed products for coastal and island customers.
Martin Marietta Materials is the nation's second largest producer of construction aggregates and a leading producer of magnesia-based chemical and refractory products used in a wide variety of industries.
