Greenlight Communications-Internet Canada and York University offer degree credit courses on the Internet
Business Wire, Oct 3, 1995
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1995--GREENLIGHT (CANADIAN DEALING NETWORK: GCIX NASDAQ OTC BULLETIN BOARD: GLGTF) Greenlight Communications Inc., its wholly- owned subsidiary Internet Canada Corporation and York University's Atkinson College are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement to jointly offer and market degree and non degree credit courses to be delivered over the Internet.
This pilot program is the first comprehensive arrangement between a university and a Canadian-based internet access provider to offer recognized degree and non degree credit courses on line.
The VRAIE project - Virtual Reality Assisted Interactive Education - has a research component dedicated to developing sophisticated authoring tools. During the 18 month period of the pilot project, Internet Canada and Atkinson College plan to develop and offer a minimum of four courses. Both parties will regularly assess the academic and economic viability of the venture.
"If we are successful, our on line collaboration with Internet Canada will provide Canadians with increased access to educational opportunities everywhere," says Peter Such, Associate Dean of Atkinson. "It will make university education more easily available to the disabled, to those who live in remote areas, and to people whose busy modern lives make it impossible to attend classes in the traditional way."
"Atkinson College and Greenlight will collaborate on the preparation of courses for delivery over the internet with Atkinson College maintaining authority over the academic content of the courses. The courses to be offered are currently taught in regular classes and in Atkinson's correspondence program." "The correspondence program has used CD-ROM, videotapes and internet relay chat programs to link professors and students. This will be expanded on in the internet courses," Such says. Internet Canada's technical and creative expertise will be used to develop the user interface and delivery system.
