O2 Technology Announces Early Availability of the O2 ODMG Database System; Scalable System Offers Full Compliance with ODMG Standard
Business Wire, Oct 30, 1995
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 1995--O2 Technology, Inc. today announced the early availability of the O2 ODMG Database System, an open, client/server environment that enables C developers to build industrial-strength, high-performance database applications.
The release includes three modules of the O2 System and introduces new performance enhancements and expanded system functionality in addition to compliance with Object Database Management Group (ODMG) standards.
The first fully ODMG-compliant object database management system for the U.S. market, the O2 ODMG Database System consists of the following modules: a database engine, a C language binding, and an object query language (OQL) interpreter and optimizer, all of which fully adhere to the ODMG standard. -0-
Related Results
o O2Engine, the high-performance database engine, offers robust, powerful features for access to and updating of large amounts of persistent, shared and secure objects. o The C Interface is a fully compliant ODMG C binding that supports standard C programming style, transparent management of C objects, and reuse of existing C applications. o OQL, the query language, provides full associative data access, and its interpreter and optimizer provide optimum performance for the largest databases. -0-
"The ODMG standard is going to play the role in the object database world that SQL has played for relational databases," said Francois Bancilhon, president and CEO of O2 Technology, Inc. "The U.S. market has been waiting for standards-based products, and the O2 system is the first object database with complete ODMG compliance."
The new O2 ODMG Database System is a special release for the U.S. market and offers improved performance, reliability, and ease of administration. Enhancements to the O2 System include: -0-
o Enhanced concurrency control, recovery, indexing, and clustering. o Improved object creation and manipulation. o A more intelligent query optimizer that takes into account physical schema information. o Ability to call C methods from OQL, increasing the power of expression of the language. o Schema update capabilities, allowing user to modify the application when it's deployed. o Compliance with the XA standard, opening the system to other database engines. o Monitoring functions that return statistics on engine performance, allowing for fine-tuning of large database applications. o On-line backup. o Floating client licenses.

"We have designed a system and packaged it to specifically meet the needs of the C programmer, providing an easy and efficient way of connecting new or existing C applications to a powerful database," Bancilhon said.
The O2 ODMG Database System is currently available in a UNIX version at a price of $3,000 per seat, or $15,000 for a four-seat license that includes one-year onsite maintenance and training. O2 is currently offering a 30-day trial of the system for $99.
About the O2 System
According to IDC, the O2 System is the number one object database system in Europe. More than 300 customer sites worldwide deploying 3,000 licenses use modules of the O2 System to build database applications that support new data types such as text, graphics, video, and complex structures. The complete O2 System comprises a complete set of tools on top of O2Engine, including programming language bindings, an object 4GL, a set of GUI tools, a development environment, a library of reusable components, a report writer, a Web connection tool, and an interoperability tool for relational databases.
About ODMG
The Object Data Management Group (ODMG) standard is a portability standard for object databases designed by a consortium of database vendors and companies representing the user community. This group includes such organizations as Texas Instruments, Sybase, Hewlett-Packard, Andersen Consulting, and CERN.
