HP Announces Windows NT and Windows 95 Support for HP OpenView Software Distributor; New Version of HP's Enterprise Software-distribution Solution Integrates Customers' UNIX System-based and PC Environments

Business Wire, Oct 31, 1995

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 1995--In response to customer demand for single-point software distribution across UNIX(R) system-based and PC environments, Hewlett-Packard Company today announced Microsoft(R) Windows NT and Windows 95 agent support for its industry-leading enterprise software-management solution, HP OpenView Software Distributor.

HP also announced that HP OpenView Software Distributor 1.01 now distributes software to OS/2 platforms as well as PCs connected to PC NFS, IBM LANServer and Novell NetWare 4.1 network operating systems. With this announcement, customers now can truly integrate their UNIX system-based and PC environments with one tool that centrally distributes and manages software throughout an enterprise.

"Our customers consistently tell us that one of their most critical system-management needs is the need for software distribution across the enterprise," said Robert Hoog, general manager of HP's Network and System Management Division. "We're responding to this need and delivering on our commitment to bring OpenView functionality to the Windows NT environment."

HP OpenView Software Distributor, introduced in May 1993, provides centralized software-distribution management for heterogeneous multivendor-computing environments. From a central point of control, an administrator can perform a complete set of sophisticated software-management tasks, such as analysis, installation, update and inventory control across UNIX system-based and PC computing environments.

Over the past two years, HP OpenView Software Distributor has expanded its platform support to include HP-UX(1) 9.x and 10.01, Sun Solaris 2.3 and 2.4, SunOS 4.1.3 and IBM AIX 3.2. The robust UNIX system-based functionality of HP OpenView Software Distributor 1.01 is complemented by its ability to distribute software to DOS and Windows PC clients connected to Novell NetWare 3.12 and 4.1, PC NFS, IBM LANServer, Microsoft LAN Manager 2.2 and HP LM/X 1.4 network operating systems.

In addition, a subset of the HP OpenView Software Distributor functionality now is included in the HP-UX 10.0 operating system, resulting in more software-packaged in a Software Distributor-compatible format. The result is to make HP OpenView Software Distributor easier to use and more effective in reducing software administration costs.

HP OpenView Software Distributor's integration with the HP OpenView Solution Framework makes it an even more flexible and competitive software-management solution. Software-distribution depots, target servers and PCs now can be accessed directly from a centralized HP OpenView console. Additionally, HP OpenView Software Distributor's comprehensive integration with HP OpenView AdminCenter means that the distribution of software now can be performed using a configuration- and change-management process that is consistent across multiple management tasks.
