Tektronix Announces Next Major Version of Popular Windows-on-Unix Software; WinDD 2.0 to Include Cut, Copy & Paste, Win 95 and Improved Remote Administration Support

Business Wire, Oct 9, 1995

WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1995--Tektronix (NYSE:TEK), today announced the next major version of its popular WinDD software, the first product to give UNIX platform users complete access to Microsoft Windows applications.

WinDD 2.0 includes a number of major enhancements designed to tighten the links between UNIX and Windows platforms and increase the breadth of supported Windows applications and client systems.

WinDD, based on Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.51, allows Unix platform users to access Microsoft Windows applications running in native mode on a PC application server. With 486-class or better performance and native compatibility, WinDD offers a more complete Windows-on-Unix solution than any other product.

WinDD works with any TCP/IP network and supports Tektronix netstations and workstations from Sun, Silicon Graphics, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and DEC. Workstations and X terminals from other vendors can also access WinDD across the network using the X protocol.

"WinDD has taken the corporate market by storm; so much so, in fact, that other vendors are trying to imitate us by announcing similar technology," noted David Pinckard, vice president and general manager for Network Displays. "Yet they still can't deliver these first-generation products. In the meantime, our commitment to rapid time-to-market means that we're delivering the next major version of WinDD to customers -- with major enhancements -- less than a year after we announced version 1.0."

New in Version 2.0

In addition to improvements in the areas of networking and systems administration, WinDD 2.0 will seamlessly integrate Windows and UNIX platforms and expand the scope of supported systems. New for Version 2.0:

--Microsoft Windows 95 application support

--Cut, Copy & Paste between Windows and UNIX applications

--Support for SCO desktops as WinDD display clients

--Improved remote administration and access support

Microsoft Windows 95 Support

In addition to supporting Microsoft Windows 3.x, Windows NT, DOS and OS/2 character-based applications, WinDD 2.0 will deliver full Microsoft Windows 95 application support to the UNIX desktop. Windows 95 applications can be seamlessly accessed from within WinDD, and will appear under the standard Windows NT interface on UNIX systems. Full support for the Windows 95 interface will be available shortly after Microsoft ports the new interface to Windows NT in early 1996.

Cut, Copy & Paste

WinDD 2.0 will also allow users to freely cut, copy and paste text and graphics between Windows and UNIX applications. For example, a user could have both their company's UNIX customer database and PC spreadsheet applications open, and easily copy sales data into a spreadsheet for reporting purposes.

SCO Open Desktop Support

Adding to WinDD's comprehensive list of supported platforms, Tektronix is also announcing support for the Santa Cruz Operation's Open Desktop for PC UNIX systems. Now SCO users can also get complete Microsoft Windows access from WinDD.

Improved Remote Administration and Access

WinDD 2.0 will also enable administrators to set additional system configurations remotely -- thereby improving WinDD's centralized administration capabilities. New features for WinDD 2.0 include remote license administration, remote printer configuration and improved administrative ties between WinDD and UNIX systems.

"WinDD has become the benchmark for Windows application access in Unix environments," noted Pinckard. "We're ensuring this remains the case by adding features our competitors don't offer and delivering higher performance and better network efficiency than they've announced."

Availability and pricing

WinDD Server 2.0 will be available within 30 days. Prices start at $2,495 for one server with a ten user license. Prices for additional workstation user licenses begin at $295.
