S3 and Compaq to host "The First MPEG Developers Conference"; Conference to focus on developing MPEG titles based on OM-1 and MPC3 Standards
Business Wire, Sept 11, 1995
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 1995--S3 Incorporated (Nasdaq:SIII), in conjunction with Compaq Computer Corporation, announced today that it will be hosting "The First MPEG Developers Conference" on September 26-27, 1995, at the Hyatt Regency/San Francisco Airport in Burlingame, CA.
Following-up on S3's introduction of a low-cost hardware MPEG audio and video decoder, the conference is part of S3 and Compaq's multimedia strategy to assist a wide range of software developers in producing Open MPEG Consortium (OM-1) and Software Publishers Association (MPC3) compliant MPEG titles.
"With support from S3, Compaq and Microsoft for the OM-1 and MPC3 standards, software developers now have access to a common platform that enables them to develop mass market MPEG titles," said Gary Johnson, senior vice president and general manager of multimedia and mobile products for S3. "The First MPEG Developers Conference is a continuation of S3 and Compaq's joint efforts designed to ensure the widest possible array of high-quality MPEG content for the rapidly growing base of MPEG-enabled PCs."
Geared towards educating multimedia developers who are interested in creating MPEG titles, or in porting existing titles to MPEG, the First MPEG Developers Conference will be focused on all aspects of developing MPC3 and OM-1 compliant MPEG titles. The conference's comprehensive agenda includes in-depth MPEG technology primers and programming tutorials, as well as audio/video capture considerations and case studies of MPEG success stories.
"The initial wave of MPEG title development began in June with Compaq's announcement of the availability of edutainment-based titles bundled with its future systems," said Mike Nell, director of multimedia marketing for S3. "As a follow-up to these initial releases, we expect to see a significant increase in business, financial and word processing titles featuring MPEG-based video."
Co-sponsored by Diamond Multimedia, ELSA, Sigma Designs and others, the two-day conference is a gathering of leading-edge companies involved in the technical and marketing aspects of MPEG. Presenters for the conference include: Compaq, Diamond Multimedia, GTE Interactive, IBM Interactive Media, Interactual Technologies, Laser-Pacific, Macromedia, Matshushita/Panasonic, Microsoft, Optibase, Optivision, Pacific Video Resources, Philips, S3, Sigma Designs, Sony Electronics, Software Publishing Association, Triad Studios, Tsunami, VIS, and Xing Technology.
In addition to the conference, an adjoining MPEG vendor fair will feature the top companies showing their latest MPEG products and services. MPEG service bureaus, encoder and decoder manufacturers, authoring system vendors, and CD pressing companies will all be represented.
