EPSON adds 486DX capability for its line of intelligent terminals; answers need for more POS processing power
Business Wire, Sept 18, 1995
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 1995--EPSON Monday announced the availability of a 486DX2/50 module for its IT line of open architecture intelligent terminals including the IT-U375, IT-U925 and the IT-U950.
Retailers now have a choice between the new 486DX or the original 486SX processor. Additionally, because of the IT's modular design, retailers can upgrade their existing IT systems simply by ordering the new module.
"Processing power is becoming a critical decision factor in purchasing a POS system," said Bud Weist, business unit director for EPSON. "The addition of 486DX2 capability for the IT product line both answers the need for power and further underscores EPSON's commitment to provide migration and upgrade paths for retailers."
In today's retail environment, POS systems must support inventory replenishment, communication with the back office and data communication with suppliers. Additionally, the systems must support training through on-system, multimedia programs and must allow the retailer to provide higher and higher levels of customer service.
"Imagine a POS system that can check on the in-stock situation, locate the item at another store or tell the clerk exactly when the next shipment is due all within minutes of the customer's request," said Weist. "This is the future of retailing."
The 486DX2/50 module is currently available and carries an MSRP of less than $200 for an upgrade. IT configurations incorporating the 486DX2/50 begin with an MSRP of $2,166.
