PLATINUM technology announces TSreorg for Windows NT, OpenVMS; GUI-based utility simplifies, speeds Oracle database reorganization

Business Wire, Sept 19, 1995

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 1995-- International Oracle User Week Booth # 1041 -- PLATINUM technology, inc., today announced general availability of PLATINUM TSreorg Version 1.0 for two additional operating systems, Windows NT and OpenVMS. TSreorg already supports all major UNIX platforms.

TSreorg is a GUI-based utility that simplifies the task of reorganizing Oracle database tables, indexes and tablespaces to maximize data accessibility.

"TSreorg has become an essential tool for database administrators (DBAs) burdened by the time-consuming task of keeping their mission-critical Oracle databases organized and efficient," said Paul Humenansky, PLATINUM executive vice president and COO. "By extending support to Windows NT and OpenVMS, TSreorg now provides users even greater flexibility in customizing this powerful tool to their particular open enterprise environments."

TSreorg Improves Oracle Database Speed, Efficiency

As a result of heavy use, Oracle databases often become disorganized, which can impede performance and cause applications to fail. TSreorg improves the speed and efficiency of Oracle databases by restructuring objects that have become disorganized, providing DBAs with an efficient and reliable alternative to manually rebuilding Oracle databases for defragmentation.

TSreorg includes these key features:

- Distributed architecture -- TSreorg consists of both an operator

console (client) component and an agent (server) component. The

console provides graphical displays for managing reorganizations

and other tasks, while the agent handles processing functions.

This distributed architecture minimizes use of network resources

and maximizes scalability, as users can install additional

servers as necessary. - Automatic tablespace reorganization -- TSreorg allows DBAs to

manually control reorganizations and fully automate the process.

The database tool monitors tablespaces, checking for predefined

statistical thresholds. If these thresholds are reached, TSreorg

automatically begins a reorganization upon a predefined "window

of opportunity," eliminating interference with normal computing

operations. - Failure prediction and recovery facilities -- Before starting a

reorganization, TSreorg performs a failure prediction on each

target server to determine if the necessary resources are

available to execute the task successfully. If the resources are

not available, the DBA is alerted. To ease recovery after a

problem, such as a power outage, TSreorg keeps track of where

processing had stopped. Once the problem is solved, TSreorg

continues the reorganization process. - Physical structure maintenance facilities -- In addition to safe

and efficient reorganizations, TSreorg can perform data

compression and partitioning, column shrinking, row ordering,

table migration and other functions to optimize physical

structures. - Graphical access to data -- With simple point-and-click commands,

DBAs can access database statistics from throughout the

enterprise to identify and correct problems.

TSreorg and the Open Enterprise Environment

TSreorg is part of PLATINUM's product strategy to bring best-of-breed data and systems management to the open enterprise environment (OEE) the networked, heterogeneous computing environment that includes MVS-, UNIX-, and Windows-based platforms and may contain VMS, AS/400, and OS/2 systems.

Availability, Platform Support and Pricing

PLATINUM expects the operator console and agent components of TSreorg Version 1.0 for Windows NT and OpenVMS to be generally available in October 1995. Currently, TSreorg operator console versions are compatible with Open Look, OS/2 Presentation Manager, and Motif; and TSreorg agents run on VMS and UNIX platforms, including HP-UX, AIX, Sun OS/Solaris, Data General, Pyramid, and Sequent.

PLATINUM plans to add Informix and Sybase SQL Server database support to TSreorg in the second half of 1995, and Microsoft SQL Server and DB2 for AIX support in the first half of 1996. Starting list price for a TSreorg operator console is $8,000; and $3,500 for each agent. Prices vary, depending on the number of users and CPU.
