EMC announces $3.1 million sale of mainframe and open storage systems to AlliedSignal; Automotive and Aerospace giant expands use of EMC storage across client/server and mainframe environments
Business Wire, Sept 25, 1995
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 1995--EMC Corp., the world's leading independent provider of intelligent information storage solutions, today announced that AlliedSignal Inc. has purchased three Symmetrix 5000 family Integrated Cached Disk Arrays (ICDA) and two Centriplex 2000 ICDA storage systems from EMC for $3.1 million.
The EMC systems chosen by AlliedSignal employ RAID (Redundant Arrays of Independent Disk) technology to provide high levels of system availability and data protection. These latest EMC systems join two Symmetrix 5000 family storage systems purchased in 1994 by AlliedSignal, a $12.8 billion automotive, aerospace, and engineering materials manufacturer with headquarters in Morris Township, N.J. AlliedSignal chose EMC after evaluating storage solutions from IBM and Storage Technology.
"EMC gives us a very high-performance, cost-effective, and reliable environment for managing our storage needs," said Sandy Castle, AlliedSignal's Manager of Technical Services. "The EMC solution reduced our floor space requirements for storage from 1,300 square feet down to 400. EMC's support of different data formats used by our previous storage systems made for a much faster, simpler conversion to the EMC environment. We were up and running with EMC more quickly since no applications or operating system upgrades were required, as is often the case with other storage solutions."
"AlliedSignal exemplifies a technology leader that is taking advantage of EMC's systems across both its mainframe and client/server environments to cut costs and gain a competitive edge," said Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC President and CEO. "EMC is ready with a strong family of products to meet the wide range of computing environments found in leading companies today."
AlliedSignal's Computing Technology Center uses EMC's Symmetrix systems to store data generated by finance, engineering, manufacturing, and distribution applications. The Symmetrix systems are attached to the IBM and Amdahl mainframes through high-speed fiber-optic ESCON connections.
AlliedSignal chose the Centriplex 2000 systems to provide centralized storage for Hewlett-Packard K400 UNIX-based servers and Sun Microsystems backup servers running computer-aided design applications. EMC also will store data contained on an ORACLE relational database, which supports Product Data Management. EMC's Epoch Enterprise Backup software provides automatic data backup and recovery for the Centriplex system and other storage devices on an AlliedSignal client/server network.
"The openness of Centriplex allows us to manage our increasingly complex storage requirements from a central point and dynamically re-allocate storage across different servers as processing demands change," said Arnold Acedo, Regional Operations Manager for AlliedSignal. "Centriplex's RAID and Epoch technology also delivers the high reliability and recoverability we need for compute-intensive analysis calculations, which sometimes run for several days."
EMC Corp., based in Hopkinton, Mass., is a world leader in enterprise-wide information storage and retrieval technology, designing systems for mainframe, midrange and open systems environments. The company has offices worldwide and trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol EMC.
